Characters: Moonracer, Override Location: Some miles away from base, Nevada desert Content Warnings: N/A Plot Summary: Moonracer decides to give the open roads a spin, but a certain someone decides to tag along.
She felt that urge, the need to get out. She felt the need to go full out on the roads, just like she use to back home. Moonracer felt that need for speed striking her for the first time in months, since she had left home and had hardly been able to entertain the thought of ever truly racing full throttle. As a Wrecker and ambassador, Moonracer had had little else to occupy her mind but her duties. But now that she was here, on a planet she would probably stay for some time, she saw opportunity presenting itself.
What was really a bonus with the area around Omega-1, it was open, flat, and for several miles no one would see you. It meant she could go almost all out if she wanted to. And Moonracer had every intention of doing just that. First though, she peered out of the base entrance, which had slid open when she came up to it. Alright, no passerbys or any prying eyes to be concerned about. Just one of the many precautions she was now well aware of to take before she left base.
Once her feet touch the asphalt though, all caution went out the window as she transformed, engine revving excitedly. A moment later, she was racing down the road that went left of the base, a long winding road she had been eyeing since she had first gotten to the base, kicking up some of the dust that had settled upon the scorching hot concrete. "Hell yea! Been way too long!" Moonracer couldn't help yelling at the top of her vocalizer, engine revving and purring as she pushed her speeds, already reaching faster than a normal Earth car should be capable of. Not that she quite cared to follow the speed laws laid on this planet, not with this long stretch of road just asking to be raced on.
It was by no means a Velocitronian track, but it would suffice. Moonracer had to get this urge out of her system after being cooped up in a space ship for weeks to months at a time and rarely being able to indulge her natural needs for racing and speeding about. However, the sound of another engine soon cut through her moment of elation, causing her to shift her mirrors to see who was following.
It was Override, of course. The red and white racer had the same cravings for speed that her best friend had, only her need for speed was more intense, and addictive. She may have been on Earth for purely diplomatic reasons, but she'd also previously run off with Shane back to Velocitron for a quick spell to take the edge off. Today however, she had a special guest to take a drive with.
She'd heard the base door opening and closing from inside, and also the subsequent roar of engines afterwards. It was music to her audials, begging her to come along in a fantastic race. To nobody's surprise, it had been the only other Velocitronian on base, also eager to satiate her hunger.
Override closed the distance in a remarkably quick fashion, as was to be expected from the Suprema of the Speed Planet. She didn't need to be best friends with Moonracer to understand just what she was doing out here, but it helped regardless.
"Speed fever, Moonracer?" she cheerfully asked from beside her Amica, keeping pace with her as they rounded turns along the desert road.
When Moonracer realized just who was covering the distance, it came as no surprise. Override was one of the fastest on Velocitron and the Suprema for a reason after all, so internally Moonracer couldn't help grinning. Seeing the red and white racer coming speeding up to her side would never get old. It felt like forever since she had last raced alongside her Amica Endura and just enjoyed the feel of the wind moving over her frame, her tires tearing up the pavement, and just going full out without a care in the world.
"You have no idea." Moonracer responded, excitement clear in her tone as they followed the winding roads. "Being a Wrecker is great and all, but being in that two-person ship for weeks to months on end drives you crazy. I've been itching to get some racing in for months." It really had been a while, not since her last visit to Velocitron. Moonracer had always made a note to take a side trip one of these days home to check and see how things are going, making sure everything was still standing while she was gone, especially Override. She was not only one of her closest friends but also her leader, so to say the least she did worry deep down.
For now though, this would suffice to shake off the rustiness of not fulfilling the burning desire to race. "Now Suprema, lets see if I still got the moves to give you a run for your shanix, shall we?" Moonracer teased before taking off past Override, this time shooting for her full speed.
If she weren't already transformed, Override would've been smiling the brightest of smiles. It'd been a while since she'd gone up against Moonracer, and in fact she wasn't sure if they'd ever raced after she became Suprema. The last time they'd raced had been the Gold Circuit 400, one of the circuits leading up to the Speedia 500. Stars that was a long time ago, now that she thought about it.
She perished the old happy thoughts with a burst of speed from her muon jets, rocketing her up to Moonracer's relative position before cutting them off. Override elected not to pass her just yet, however; she wanted to savor it. "You sure I can't interest you in a few upgrades while we're here? There's this set of maglock tires that I think would look absolutely stunning on you."
Moonracer already expected she wouldn't beat Override going at their fullest. It would probably be a close race, even to the point Moonracer could probably have easily given Ransack second thoughts of taking her on. But, Moonracer was more than satisfied to just be racing at all. It was in these rare moments now that she could did the small statured Wrecker realize how much of a side she had missed.
But, there was something she was expecting sooner or later. "Come on now Override, you know getting upgrades isn't my thing." Moonracer chuckled, but she never minded that her friend always tried. And occasionally, Moonracer would oblige to at least try an upgrade or two, but she always felt odd getting them when she had become so accustomed to going without. "But, glad to see something hasn't changed after all this time."
Moonracer was right, some things hadn't changed. She was still fiercely proud of her unmodified skills on the road, despite how often Override made the case that a few upgrades would do her well. Despite how stubborn her best friend often was, she couldn't help but find it a bit endearing. It took a lot of self control to abstain from upgrades, especially when your home planet's culture revolves around speed. But with any luck, Override would break that self control.
Override kicked in her accelerator, boosting ahead of Moonracer for a bit of flashy driving. The red GT40 then spun round once it held a healthy enough lead, leaving Override driving around the course backwards, but still racing just as well. They were practically nose to nose now; a good distance for a little heart to heart. "Come on, Moonracer. I want it to be you who beats me in the next Speedia 500."
Moonracer wasn't surprised at Override's tenacity. The Lambo could be stubborn, but her Amica was just as stubborn as she was, if not more so. Moonracer took great pride in being able to prove nay sayers wrong about needing upgrades to be able to win, if even shaving off those few seconds for a record best. But, the younger racer had always been insistent to show racing could be done without upgrades, and she had more than proven herself capable of racing in the higher circuits, even to the point she was more than qualified to take on the Speedia 500. She just had chosen not to.
"And we still have a while until then Override, and you have a long time yet before you’ll be stepping down." Moonracer reminded her, gently refusing the upgrades once more. She knew Override wanted her to at least try, but a part of Moonracer felt she wasn't ready for such a responsibility. "Override, you know I would be more than honored to be your successor. But being the next Suprema, a leader to our people...that’s not me. At least, not any time soon.” She pointed out. As often as Moonracer was eager to prove others wrong about her youth and usefulness, even she knew where her limits lied, and competing to be the next leader of Velocitron is where she drew the line right now.
“I am always glad to take your advice and encouragement, but I have the one upgrade I need and the skills to more than give anyone back home a challenge.” Moonracer insisted, engine revving as emphasis.
Override huffed, spinning around rapidly to bring herself parallel with Moonracer once more. She couldn't not admire that headstrong attitude of hers, even if she felt it was a little bit misguided. It was one thing to load up on upgrades to win a race, but you still needed the talents to use them properly. In her days she'd seen plenty a racer who tried using their upgrades to compensate for their own lack of ability, which cost them against more talented drivers.
She couldn't convince her best friend, at least not yet it seemed. Still, Override had meant every word about succeeding her as the Suprema. There were very few bots that she considered at or near her caliber, Moonracer chief among them. She knew it was time to stop pressing the subject further though, and continued on with the race.
"Alright, but if somebody else beats me, I'll be awfully mad at you," she remarked, her tone still pleasantly happy.
"Perhaps, but you wouldn't be able to be mad at this face for long." Moonracer teased lightly, her tone still cheerful and humorous. It was not uncommon for Moonracer to get into arguments over refusing upgrades, but it was those she was close to, Override especially, that they could at least be joking and friendly. Perhaps a small margin of annoyance each time, but that never stopped them from being friends. "You'd probably have better luck getting me a future Conjunx before I ever became remotely close to becoming the next Suprema." Moonracer mused.
Still, it had been a while since she had really ever tried out any upgrades or took up the offer to look. Besides, it wouldn't hurt to take the trip to Velocitron one of these days and spend some time with Override and maybe others if time permitted. Being a Wrecker threw her for a loop now, which meant she might be called upon at any time and well...life expectancy of Wreckers wasn't exactly high. Not that she was going to tell Override that.
With a low rev of her engine Moonracer decided she could probably appease them both, "Tell you what Override," Moonracer began, "I'll take up your offer to at least go look at upgrades, and give some a test run. Additionally, I get to see home again after all this time and get to catch up with my best friend, how's that sound?" Moonracer suggested.
Override hit the breaks in a half-second, transforming as she did so; she also did a front flip, for dramatic flare. This was perhaps the best she was going to get out of Moonracer, and it was the farthest she'd ever gotten her to trying out an upgrade or ten. She'd be a fool not to take her up on such an opportunity, not to mention she could practically feel that homesick attitude rolling off of her.
She rolled forwards a bit on her heels, practically giddy at the prospect of just spending some free time with her best friend again. "I think I can arrange it," she replied, putting on her best impression of a real head of state. Override bent her arms together, mind already flush with possibilities.
"Going to try to race Delta for a whole day again, too? Because that'd make my day."
The moment Override hit her breaks, Moonracer was slamming on her own, not expecting the sudden stop. Coming to a halt and turned to the side slightly, she watched as Override transformed and soon followed suit, shifting to her own robot mode with a little less dramatic flair. To be honest, she didn't think the offer to try some upgrades would have warranted this reaction from Override, practically seeing the eagerness in her best friend's frame.
In fact, Moonracer had not seen Override this giddy in quite some time. "You could probably arrange it whether you were the Suprema or not." Moonracer chuckled, crossing her arms loosely over her chest. And to be honest, Moonracer was getting giddy herself. As much as she wasn't too enthused to have agreed to try the new upgrades, going back to Velocitron, if even for a few days, would have more than made her reunion with her Amica all the more worth the troubles of traveling.
"Race Delta again huh." Moonracer rubbed her chin in thought for a moment. Now that was giving her an idea, a broad grin forming on her face plates. "Pick a few upgrades and we'll test them that way." Okay, now she was willing to throw caution to the wind on this one. "Perhaps the Suprema of Velocitron would like to join me this time, really know what its like to race our great capital." Moonracer suggested, giving wide pleading optics to Override, wanting to share the exhilaration and rush she had felt the first time she had made the attempt, the very event that had put her name out there on the racing circuits.
Override mentally steepled her fingers together, her plan coming to fruition. She knew Moonracer couldn't resist her offer, but then again Override couldn't resist her's either. Even better, she said she was allowed to pick out a few upgrades instead of just one. As soon as she was able to, Override would be sending a massive list of upgrades for Clocker to assemble just for the two of them. Only the best for her Amica.
The Suprema chuckled to herself, folding her arms together. Moonracer had made a name for herself before Override had, in retrospect. She might not have won a Speedia 500, but racing along side a moving capital city and away from a wave of fire was also headline worthy. In fact, there once was a time when it was Override looking up to Moonracer for having pulled off such a feat.
"I can't turn down an offer like that, you know. I guess I'll have to make the arrangements for us to head back home."
"Can't refuse the offer? More like you can't refuse a challenge. The Speedia is one thing, but racing alongside the city away from a wave of fire hot on your heels is something entirely different." Moonracer said with a grin. There had been a few times during that solo race she had felt like the flames would have caught up with her. A few close calls and rough terrain had really put her racing capabilities to the test, what really showed one didn't need upgrades to win.
She nevertheless was looking forward to the visit back home, coming up beside Override and placing an arm around her shoulders. "Who knows, maybe I'll get a personal best." She mused, only imagining what sort of upgrade ideas Override was getting through that processor of hers. Because Moonracer was putting a lot of faith into her friend's choices, which tended to not be the worst. That much she could admit. "Just try not to go too crazy with the upgrades."
If Override had ever decided to expose her engine from her hood, it would be spitting fire right now. Instead of having said chest modification, she simply spun the wheels mounted on her shoulders furiously at the mention of a challenge. She was all too aware of how easy it was for somebody to goad her into a race, yet reveled in it. Override took pride in the fact that her spark would never let her quit or back down.
The Suprema's eye suddenly gave off a noticeable glint, one that Moonracer was most likely all too familiar with by now. She chuckled loudly at her Amica's challenge, optics locking on her in a piercing gaze, "You'll have a hard time keeping up with me, otherwise~"
To see Override's ultra-competitive side in this day in age was like seeing the heavens themselves aligning. It was almost unheard of, especially after she'd assumed the position of Suprema. In the past she'd been conscious about keeping it in check, but there would always be times like this where it simply hungered to break free.
