It would be surprising that once more Volt had managed to go off exploring again. Though the sparkling wasn’t tired, so she didn’t think she needed a nap, no she wanted to go explore again. The little bot was sure there were places she had never been to. She knew this to be true of the outside, but she had promised anyone who cared to listen to her that she won’t go outside, not until she was big enough to be able to transform.
Of course, that didn’t mean she couldn’t go exploring the inside of the base right? She figured she was being a good little femme by exploring the inside the base, and that’s just what she was doing when she found herself in a very new place.
As the Sparkling looked around this room, she saw some of the wreckage looking items had dark marks on them. That’s when she began to know this must be where the good guys practiced with their weapons. She also remembered that there was some talk of giving the Sparklings training, too, but it might not be today. She wondered, would she be lucky, and gets an early try?
The Sparkling was unaware of her knack at the moment since she had never fired a weapon.
She stayed where she stood, wondering if she should pick up a weapon to try out when she got distracted by a noise which didn’t surprise her, so she went off to discover the noise, and saw a large Mech shooting at the targets, which only confirmed what this room was for.
When the big guy was done, at least when he stopped shooting, she began singing his praises as only a Sparkling could. “Oh wow! You good! You’re good at that!” she said, starting to feel like she wanted to try it out.
Ironhide could usually be found down in the shooting range when he had free time while on base. Some bots really enjoyed giving their T-Cogs a whirl. Him? His cannons. He had been even twitchier than usual with the number of bots getting themselves captured. The most recent of which was Rodimus. That one pissed Ironhide off, though, not as much as when they'd taken that kid. The 'cons really did have no shame, taking a kid like that. Rodimus was one of those who, while annoying as pit sometimes, an Autobot through and through. Hell, the Matrix had chosen him to carry it for a time. And, apparently, in his own universe, he'd been given a position of command. Which meant that he knew things...
He finished shooting, his cannons powering down. A critical eye was cast on the targets he'd left in devastation. Hmph. They needed to get some stronger stuff.
The old timer was startled by a small voice calling out to him. He turned quickly, optics widened slightly. He paused when he saw the sparkling. A sparkling. It had been a good, long time since he'd seen one. He'd even, at one time, considered broaching the topic with Chromia, talking about starting up a little family unit of their own. But, with a war going on, that just wasn't the smartest thing to do. Still, the old bot's expression involuntarily softened.
Then, he grinned, the scars on his faceplates pulling as the mesh around his optics crinkled just slightly. There was something about the little one's genuine praise that warmed his spark.
"Thank ya. Lots and lots of practice..."
He paused, tilting his head, observing the sparkling as his smile slipped just a little.
"You one of Prowl's little ones?"
He'd heard that the tactician had just finished a carrying term. Twins, apparently. Maybe this was one of them?
Volt noticed things about this guy, one he was big, which didn’t surprise her, after all, she would be big someday too, the second was the scars on his face. The scars didn’t bother her, because they didn’t make a person bad. She knew he was good since clearly he didn’t hurt her and he was an Autobot. Volt smiled at him when he thanked her for her praise and mentioned that it was lots and lots of practice. She knew that meant if she practiced a lot like he had maybe she could get good. Then she could protect her friends too. She liked the idea of protecting others.
She noticed the smile slipping slightly, that worried her, was she going to get into trouble? She hoped not, but no he had a question to ask her, and she knew the answer to that, but she also knew that the ending of her answer would probably piss him off more. still… she thought she should tell him because telling the truth was good.
She shook her head, in the no formation. “Nuh uh, Unckoo Pow, not my papa, he nice, and I am friends with his little ones, I the newest Femme Sparkling,” she said then added the part that would really piss him off. “Old papa no want me, he pushed me out of the hole in the ship, then Unckoo 'atchet found me, and made sure I OK,” she told him.
She soon decided a change in topic was needed since the thoughts of her carrier was making her sad. “Is it OK if I try that? What you were doing before?’ she asked, she knew she probably couldn’t use the big targets, but she did see the smaller targets and the smaller guns. She also thought it would be better to ask for permission.
Ironhide had seen a lot during the war. And before. A lot of terrible things. Things that had made less hardy bots purge their tanks. But the thought of someone willingly causing harm to a sparkling...
Theirs was a dying race, made so by the Decepticons. Every new life had to be protected. Pushed out of a hole in a ship. He should track the slagger down and teach him a lesson or two. One for cruelty and the other for idiocy. It made sense though, that Ratchet had found her. The old medic had one of the softest sparks Ironhide had ever seen, even if he was grumpy on the outside.
The question she posed honestly took him aback. A sparkling shooting a gun? He glanced at the targets he'd wrecked and then back to her.
"Not till yer a little older and know the basics. There's a right way to do trainin', and yer just under the age cut."
In reality, Ironhide had never dealt with a sparkling before, and had no idea when it was proper to do what with their development. But, that seemed as good an answer as any.
Volt felt sad that she wasn’t allowed to go try what the big mech had been doing. She thought it seemed fun. She loved the light show she had witnessed, but Ironhide was correct in his judgment she was too young. Although she was saddened now, she would have understood when she was older, and not only that but she would have been grateful. The sparkling stage was for fun and exploration after all.
Volt nodded her head solemnly “ok! I go past the age cut, then I learn the basics, that means I can go here and try that out,” she said making a new goal she had to accomplish. She smiled at the big guy, to show she wasn’t upset about it. “I wanna learn Basics, so I can protect my friends, Shade, Gitta, and Unckoo Pows Sparkling’s too So-lar-is too, Req oh and Dylan, Unckoo Ratchet, and Oppy!” she said, not thinking how happy her statement might have made another.
She really wanted to protect the friends she had made here, and most of those friends were of course Sparklings.
Ironhide was glad she'd left that subject for the moment. She was a little thing, but, she already had some moxy to her. Ironhide liked that. He gave an approving nod.
"When ya get big enough, ya come back to see ole Ironhide and I'll set ya up with what ya need."
He paused then, glancing back at the targets. He was done for the day, ready to head out and grab an energon ration. His optics turned back to the sparkling.
"How about ya take a walk with me. Ya can tell me about the other sparklin's,"
Her smile couldn’t help but widen at the old man’s words. Not only did she have a goal, but she now had an objective to do when she reached that goal. She nodded her head, “ok! Sounds like a plan!” she told him smiling happily, before she remembered something, although he basically introduced himself, she hadn’t done so. “Oh! I forgot, my name is Voltwave” she said, introducing herself “nice to meet ya!’ she said happily.
She smiled at his next words. She knew that most would be very concerned that a sparkling was wondering the halls alone. She had done so a lot, but Ironhide had been here a lot longer than she had, which meant he probably had explored the place a lot more than she had, so since he invited her to walk with him she decided to follow him, and let him take her places. “ok!” she said happily, she gets to explore and she gets to talk about her friends, she loved this.
Ironhide gave her a nod in return to her introduction, gruff face softer than it had been in a long while. Even his hard warrior's spark was softened by the sheer sweetness of the sparkling. And it took a lot to soften Ironhide.
"Good to meet ya too. Ya can call me 'Hide, if it's easier for ya."
He took a few steps toward the door before realizing that Voltwave was much smaller than him. He paused a moment before looking down at her.
"...want me to carry ya, or are ya fine on yer own?"
He had no idea how to interact with younglings like this.
The little Sparkling smiled at the big Cybertronian. Despite his gruff exterior, he seemed like a good guy to be around. She knew this to be true thanks to their interactions that the two of them had. She continued to smile when she was told it was nice to meet her.
Although certain she could pronounce his name, since it wasn’t long, she decided to go with calling him Hide for now.
The trouble with walking with a big bot was that she had to run to keep up with him. This was especially troublesome since she hadn’t quite mastered running all that well. When she saw that he had stopped she felt joy, that meant she could catch up to him. But then he had to ask that question.
She knew it would be better to be picked up, that way she didn’t get in the way of another’s feet. “I afraid of heights” she admitted, it wouldn’t be surprising that she would be, due to the falling she had done. “Oh, but I didn’t feel scared when Oppy was holding me, that cause I was looking at him. Can I do that?’ she asked him. She thought it would work the same if she looked at him and not how high she had been.
Ironhide stared down at the little one for a moment. Well...pit. He'd been hoping that, if was slow enough, she could keep up. He'd...never held a sparkling before. His servos were more suited for bashing heads and fixing weapons than holding little ones. But...he couldn't deny that, despite the flash of reservation that went through him, he wanted to. It was an opportunity that didn't often come about.
And she was afraid of heights? That one confounded him. What now? Oh, good, she had a solution. Primus, she was a smart little thing.
"Ye can do what ya need ta," he frowned thoughtfully, "Shouldn't be too bad for ya. I'm not as tall as Optimus..." at least, he assumed that 'Oppy' was Optimus.
He bent, then, lowering himself into a half-crouch and extending his arms to Voltwave. He had literally no idea how to pick up a sparkling. Would she clamber up like one of those Earth monkeys? Need him to actually lift her? He hadn't a clue.
Volt mentioned she was afraid of heights because that’s what
she thought it was, but she was far from the truth. The little Femme was really afraid of falling; of course, she should know that Ironhide, hell none of the Autobots would have allowed her to fall. She saw him bend over, and the arms extended to her.She placed her servos onto his own bigger ones and closed her optics as she climbed up onto his arms passing his hand.
She now found a place where she felt secure, and once he was upright again, she opened her optics when she was sure she faced him.He was right though, Optimus was bigger, but whether it was because of that, or because she was so secure and knew she wouldn’t fall when she opened her optics and realized she wasn’t looking at him, she didn’t feel fear. Yup, she was afraid of falling.
Ironhide held the youngling securely in one massive arm, tucking her tightly into the crook of his elbow, his opposite servo supporting her back. It felt...nice, holding a little one like this. Without any pressing military matters to attend to. Good Primus, he was turning sentimental. It was no secret that he would be more than happy to have a sparkling of his own, but, there was no way in pit he was bringing one into this mess of a war. Especially not as things stood now.
"Ain't nothin' to it. Ye doin' alright?" he asked gruffly, starting off at a steady pace.
As the large, and quite an old Mech held her, she found herself secured in the crook of his elbow, feeling his large arms behind her back. She felt comfortable, as comfortable as she had been when Optimus had held her. She barely registered that they were moving she was so secure. The Sparkling rested in his arms, letting him take her where he wanted to go. When he spoke to her, it was gruff, but she knew he was nice so she didn’t feel bothered by it either. “Yup, Volt doin good!” she confessed to him, he was right this wasn’t so bad at all.
Her door wings twitched with her contentment as she sat there in his arms, snuggling as if hoping for warmth.
Ironhide glanced down at the sparkling as she snuggled closer. If the old bot could blush, he surely would have. Who would've thought he'd be packing around a sparkling like this? Slag, if some of his students could see him now, he'd never live it down...
Still, he couldn't deny that it felt nice. She didn't expect anything of him, didn't see any need for him to live up to any reputations. She was just happy to be carried. Speaking of which, he was supposed to be facilitating a conversation.
Slow, steady steps thudded across the metal floor as Ironhide left the room, exiting into the hallway outside.
"Now, then. Wha' about these other sparklin's? Ya friends with all of em?"
