Characters:Hot Shot, Rodimus Location: The Roof of the Autobot Base Content Warnings: N/A Plot Summary: After getting his aft kicked during his last couple of 'missions', Hot Shot seeks someone to train with in order to get stronger. But when Rodimus, the one mech he looks up to shows up, will Hot Shot be able to learn from him?
Hot Shot sat up on the roof of the Autobot base, staring out at amazing view that lie before him. Who knew that sunsets on this planet could be so impressive? It'd been awhile since he'd really gotten a chance to stretch outside of the base, but mostly due to his idiotic decisions that he'd made during his last few missions. First it had been the one he'd gone on with Wheeljack, but then there had been his solo 'mission' where he got his aft kicked yet again by that one Decepticon who turned into a train and some vehicons.
He sighed thinking about it.
The young Wrecker had clearly been in over his head. He'd wanted to be a true Wrecker as Wheeljack would say, but that's when he found himself getting injured more than usual. There was no way that he would've been strong enough to survive the missions in the days before Magnus.
Not only did it upset him a bit, it frustrated the heck out of the young Autobot. He was good at showing off, and he was quick, but this whole Wrecker thing wasn't exactly what he had thought it would be. Part of him wanted to think that maybe he was best taking orders under Ultra Magnus, but he could see why Wheeljack had his frustrations with how things were run now too. Hot Shot had more or less become a living example of it.
"Maybe I should actually start getting serious in a fight.." He grumbled to himself. Being serious wasn't something he wanted to do, especially at his young age, but maybe this was his wake-up call that things weren't as fun as he made them out to be.
But if he wanted to train with someone, who would be the best choice?
Rodimus wasn't fully sure if he'd been any help at all. He knew Hot Shot had been having trouble as of yet. Recent missions had turned sour, and of course it had led to the young mech being kept back at base. Hot Shot was vivacious. He was lively, and honestly, it reminded Roddy of himself back when he'd been Hot Rod.
That was a long time passed, however.
Sure, there were always others to compare yourself to, but Roddy found it better not to. He set out to teach Hot Shot what he'd learned in becoming a Prime, and also in taking captaincy of his own ship. You've gotta have faith in yourself; you have to be able to overcome the obstacles set ahead.
"Hey, heard you got stuck at base," Rodimus approached the subject very nonchalantly. No need for being accusatory, or even mocking. Just a simple statement. "I know it's a pain in the aft, but hey, it gives you more time to get ready for next time!"
Hot Shot continued to stare out into the sunset, completely distracted and hadn't noticed that someone had joined him up on the roof of the base. He'd been lost in his thoughts, as well as how amazing the view was. You didn't see too many sunsets like this back on Cybertron, or ever actually.
A voice was what had broke him from those thoughts, immediately recognizing that voice.
Rodimus!
Without a nanosecond's hesitation, Hot Shot immediately hopped back up onto his feet, turning to the red mech and saluting. "Rodimus, sir! I.. I didn't expect to see you here." In about zero to sixty, Hot Shot managed to go from arguably sulky to being perked up just at the sight of the former Lost Light captain. The younger mech looked up to the guy, and it was awesome to just talk to the guy.
Rodimus did have a point however, and it definitely put a whole new spin on the 'being stuck at the base thing'. While in a way it was a punishment, it was also time that he could prepare himself for the next battle. He flashed Rodimus a smirk, definitely showing signs that he was relaxing a bit.
"Yeah, I guess that's true. More time to plan and prep, but I gotta say that just sitting around the base all day is boring as scrap. I wanna go out and enjoy the open road or something. Go racing."
"Racing is the last thing you wanna do if you're already in trouble, trust me," Rodimus let out a laugh. He could remember the days where he'd been nothing but a rebel. Of course, he did still rebel against the order of things, but he was a lot more mature now - at least he liked to think he was.
"It can be tough to accept your punishments as they come, especially when they're as menial as a grounding," Roddy leaned against the railing of the roof. "But like I said. Practice and prepare. They're the most important and pertinent things you can do right now. Because everyone is expecting you to fail in the same way again. They're expecting you to make all the same mistakes. Prove them wrong."
Rodimus thought for a minute, tapping his chin. "You know what? Why don't we spar? I can teach you some stuff I learned back during the debacle with Zeta Prime and Nyon."
Hot Shot couldn't help but chuckle a bit as Rodimus began to laugh. There was something infectious about one's laugh that just made you want to laugh right along with them. It certainly helped lift his spirits a bit, and that alone had him grinning. "Yeaaah, I know. I wouldn't just because I don't want Ultra Magnus on my case, but you gotta admit.. the temptation's there."
It spoke volumes for how he would listen to Rodimus and his suggestions without having a fit. If it had been someone like Kup, he would have been annoyed, but coming from the one mech he really looked up to? It meant a lot. All the younglings he'd grown up with back on Cybertron were gonna be so freakin' jealous of him! He just knew it. As Rodimus spoke, he looked to the older mech with awe.
"I dunno.. I was so excited about seeing what being a 'true Wrecker' as Wheeljack would say was like, but I quickly learned I was way in over my helm. Every other mission since then? Yeah.. it hasn't gone well either. I know I'm young, extremely so for a Wrecker, but it just kinda makes you wonder. But if you think that I can do it? I'm so gonna do it, Rodimus."
He flashed another quick grin towards the taller mech, though it only lasted for a moment. The next words that would come out of the former captain's mouth completely caught the young Wrecker off guard, making his doorwings flick upwards with surprise.
"R-really?! You wanna spar with me? I'd be more than happy to spar with someone like you." With a daring smirk, Hot Shot took a fighting stance, thinking carefully on what he wanted his first move to be. Rushing in was something he'd normally want to do, but this was Rodimus! He couldn't just toss his advice aside like that. "Ready when you are."
"Listen, I know that it can be important to try to prove yourself. I've done it time and time again only for it to blow up in my face. I'm telling you, kid, it's dangerous. It's behavior that could get you, or someone you really care about, hurt or killed," it was a warning which was born of experience in the matter. But that was of no object at present.
Here and now, he wanted to help Hot Shot. He wanted to help him avoid hurting himself. "It'd be a pleasure to spar with a Wrecker. I've always been interested in them. Never wanted to join though. Hand-to-hand isn't exactly my forte."
He stepped away from the rooftop railing and squared up his shoulders. "Go easy on me, alright? It's been a while since I fought like this."
Hot Shot's optics widened in awe as he listened to Rodimus' words. The mech had a point, and it was hearing it from someone he looked up to that helped make it sink in all the more. He really did want to prove himself to the others, but if Rodimus had tried before and admitted that it could be dangerous.. maybe he really should try and be a bit more careful with it. But where was the fun with careful? That's how all the exciting things happened, right? Then again.. would the former leader of the Lost Light joke about something like that?
"I definitely wouldn't want someone to get hurt because of me. I mean.. I already sort.. got Wheeljack injured, but he seemed cool with it. I know that isn't always gonna be the case, but.. I trust anything you say. And that's saying something for someone like me. Ah haaa! But, yeah. Seriously though. I promise I'll be careful."
It all felt like some kinda weird dream that the older mech was wanting to not only spar with him, but teach him what he knew. If he could pinch himself, he totally would have just to be sure he wasn't in recharge, but there was no point in pinching some wiring. "You have?! That's awesome! Well.. I may not be the strongest of Wreckers, but I'll show ya all the Wrecker tricks I've learned.. some no thanks to Kup, but ya know."
At least he wasn't gonna start telling old war stories that may or may not have actually happened.
He gave Rodimus a somewhat bewildered look as he requested that the blue mech take it easy on him. "Well.. yeah. I mean I don't wanna hurt you or anything, but I'll do my best. Don't wanna disappoint or anything." He grinned, holding his fists up for a moment as he bounced a little on his peds. As he lowered his servos, he charged towards the red and yellow mech, quickly dropping into a crouch before sweeping a leg at Rodimus' ankle joint.
Rodimus was watching the movements of the smaller mech closely. He was a bouncer, much like Hot Rod had been. He thought of his formal title like a different mech because it made separating himself from his past easier. A distant memory was thrown to Kup, because Roddy felt like he knew the mech closely but couldn't quite remember.
He was squared and ready to fight, servos held up to his chassis in fists. It was only a moment before Hot Shot barreled forward, dropping low for a sweep of the legs. Classic starting move which Rodimus was able to avoid by jumping a step back.
He took a moment to get his bearings, trying to think of an offensive. He decided against taking offense. Stick to defense for now. "Nice try. But that's an easy starter to predict. Be less by the book."
Thinking of how to strike first wasn't easy. Even if Rodimus was rusty as he claimed to be, Hot Shot knew who clearly had the upper hand in this fight. Sure, it was all about the training, and learning from it all, but it was the 'thinking of what to do first' that had him all bamboozled.
Which was what eventually caused him to settle for charging in, sweeping his leg in Rodimus' direction.
Honestly, he wasn't all that surprised that the other mech had dodged.
"Ha! You mean.. not be like Ultra Magnus? If that's the case, maybe this'll be easier than I thought! But just so ya know, I'm not letting that get to my head." Just meant that he knew to just do what came naturally to him and not spam such basic attacks. There was a reason he liked to show off, after all. And to the young Wrecker, it almost sounded like Roddy wanted him to do just that.
Backflipping, Hot Shot landed back onto his peds, giving himself some distance between the two of them. A determined grin flashed across his faceplates as dove towards Rodimus' side. However, as he neared the ground, he caught himself with both hands, kicking backwards with his peds while doing a sort of handstand.
Rodimus laughed at the comment. "Exactly! Ultra Magnus is super predictable when it comes to close combat; that isn't a good thing because it means anyone can parry you." He watched the Wrecker's movements closely trying to analyze as he moved what his next strike would be.
Immediately, he countered for what he thought would be a blind rush in. Internally, he thought it was ridiculous that Hot Shot would try this approach after just being criticized for predictability. He did not, however, account for Hot Shot catching himself and launching himself back.
That hit landed, and Rodimus staggered back just slightly. He had an elated grin on his face though. "Good job!"
That's where that one mission with Wheeljack would come in handy, even though it had ended badly no thanks to that alarm. Wheeljack was a Wrecker before the age of Magnus took hold, and it let Hot Shot experience what those old days had been like. It was something even Kup couldn't teach him, but now he had a bit more experience, and he was going to use that to show Rodimus what he could do.
He grinned as he landed a hit on the mech, trying not not look extremely prideful as he was complimented. Unfortunately he just couldn't contain that inward glee at the one mech he looked up to most complimenting him. "T-Thanks!"
Hot Shot took up his fighting stance once more, looking to the older mech. "Why don't you show me some of those moves you were talking about? I promise I can take it."
Rodimus squared his shoulders, relinquishing the defensive stance he'd been in just moments before. "Right now, I'm testing what you know about offense. I want to see your moves. That way I can judge where you need work," this wasn't to shut him down. Roddy was always ready to show off his expert fighting moves.
"I promise you'll get to see this old aft in action, but I gotta know what you already know. Come at me again, and give it all you've got!" With that, Rodimus took up his defensive stance once more.
Rodimus did have a point. He needed to know what all Hot Shot was capable of before he could even begin to train him. Hot Shot smirked a bit, thinking of what he wanted to try next.
He was, of course, completely appalled by the mech's words as Rodimus egged him on. "Old?! You're not old. Old is like... Kup or Ultra Magnus. You so aren't old." He shook it off, knowing that the idea of an old Rodimus was just going to distract him. Rushing back towards Rodimus, he threw another punch, but this one was meant to be more of a distraction than anything. He knew that his senpai soon-to-be mentor would be able to block it.
Roddy watched the young mech's movements closely, analyzing and trying to plan for the attack that was to come. Close combat was a tad strange, he'd admit it. However, it had always been something he'd preferred over using long range weaponry. When Hot Shot took the very obvious method of going for a straight punch, he took a moment to consider maybe he'd been poorly trained.
That was when his legs were completely swept from underneath him, sending him - gracelessly - tumbling onto his aft. Taking a moment to gather his thoughts from the ground, he propped himself up onto his elbows; a grin broke out across his face. "That was great. Really good distraction move!"
