Characters:Hot Shot, Rodimus Location: Alaskan Cave Content Warnings: Robot Injuries Plot Summary: Tagging along with Rodimus on a mission, the duo get themselves into a rough situation when a certain Wrecker makes one mistake that could very well cost him.
If there was one thing that got Hot Shot super excited, it was going somewhere with Rodimus. He didn't care if it was just hanging out or if it was going on a mission that would actually hinder the Decepticons some more. Just.. being around the guy was amazing. It still felt so strange, though. He looked up to the guy ever since his younger years, and now here he was. Actually standing next to him! It was close to the feeling one got when they got to meet their favorite actor.. or go on some vacation to this amazing land of cartoon characters and assortment of rides and such.
But just being close to Rodimus? That was cool enough for the young Wrecker.
When he first heard they were going to Alaska, he thought the idea was pretty cool. His mind was quickly changed when he realized just how dark and cold it was there. What the heck was wrong with this place? How could a place be so dark for an entire day?! Either way, all they had to do was find the Energon Mine, get some Energon, and bail. Pure and simple.
"Would it kill the humans to at least put a little light out here? It's so dark! Well.. stars and moon aside and all."
Hot Shot flipped his visor down, hoping to at least get some kinda visual on the cave, but nothing was in sight just yet. Then again, it did always work best when there was someone else out there in the distance.
"Though I guess I gotta say the night sky's pretty cool. Certainly don't get a view like this in Jasper. And what's with that band of light stretching across the sky, anyway?" The Wrecker looked up, staring at what the humans knew as an aurora that had begun to appear up above. Why couldn't they have this sorta stuff back on Cybertron?
Rodimus wasn’t exactly sure why they kept sending him on missions to retrieve Energon, but here he was. Again. It was the second mining mission he’d been assigned to. Maybe it was just to test his skills, because for some reason Optimus was giving him the cold shoulder. It was like Optimus had never met him, which was bizarre considering Roddy had literally been a Matrix holder. Whatever. Hot Shot seemed excited, and that was important to Rodimus. Hot Shot had been in a slump of bad missions, and maybe this one could finally change that.
Upon arrival, Rodimus couldn’t help but immediately hate the place. It was cold. It was dark. And the ground was slick and wet. It was a miserable, miserable place to be, and he was beginning to regret taking this mission. His ex-vents poofed smoke puffs into the air, and although that was an interesting effect, it only reflected how absolutely freezing it was.
“Maybe a massive heater too. It’s freezing out here,” the complaint was hissed while he held his arms crossed over his chassis.
Rodimus observed the visor being slid down and copied the other. He hoped his HUD would help him to pick up on the Energon signal they’d followed here. It was of little use, however it did lock onto a key trace of Energon further up their path.
“Oh that’s an aurora. It’s radiation from their sun hitting their atmosphere,” Roddy was quite knowledgeable about things on Earth. They were things he’d picked up so long ago when he’d been here the first time. “It’s actually really awesome to be able to see it up close.”
“We should go this way, by the way, my HUD’s illuminating an Energon flow this way,” he pointed toward a narrow path just ahead of them.
Even though he understood Rodimus' pain when it came to freezing their afts off, Hot Shot still couldn't help but chuckle a little at the mention of the need for heat. "Yeah, they definitely could. I mean, don't they sorta have it worse than we do? Humans just sorta.. freeze unless they're wearing extra thick clothing and such. Just make things warmer and boom! You don't gotta freeze anymore."
Evidently, no one had bothered to tell the young Wrecker about the dangers of 'global warming'.
Once he had given up on the idea of using his visor to help them out with their situation, he turned to Rodimus, the other mech scouting the area just as he himself had done. Had he seen something that he hadn't? The Wrecker trusted the former Lost Light captain's judgement when it came to these sorts of things. He had the experience.
...Right?
"An aurora? That's pretty cool actually. Kinda makes you wonder what other cool things Earth has like that." If radiation hitting the Earth's atmosphere could make something that beautiful, he wondered what other things hitting it would look like too. It seemed so weird that an organic planet could have things like this, but it just seemed to work out that way. Hot Shot wasn't gonna judge, especially when he'd traveled to many places no thanks to being a Wrecker. "Maybe.. sometime we could go see it closer? I mean.. somewhere warmer and when we aren't busy. If you wanna that is. I know you're busy and stuff too, Rodimus, but I thought it might be cool to just.. hang out?"
His attention was caught by Rodimus as the red and yellow mech pointed in the direction that the Energon flow was. Looked like he had spotted something after all. "Awesome! We should make it quick since we're so cold and all." Without a second to waste, Hot Shot transformed, speeding off in the direction the older mech had pointed in.
It also didn't occur to him that this was the first time he'd really be driving on a wet and slick surface.
“I mean, if it wasn’t damaging to their fragile balance, I’d agree. Maybe a better idea for me would just be not to take the damn away missions where it’s cold,” Rodimus said, shaking his helm. The former Captain was a tad confused that Hot Shot hadn’t pointed out the same Energon trail when he’d scanned the area. Maybe he needed an update on his scanners?
Was Hot Shot asking him on a date? It sounded an awful lot like it. Roddy raised an optic ridge at the tonation of the request. He considered the possibility for a moment. “It sounds like a great idea, just be prepared for the fact that no matter where we go to see them, it’s cold. They mostly occur at the Earth’s poles.”
He wasn’t expecting Hot Shot to take off the way that he did. A warning was bubbling to the surface about the dangerous driving conditions, but he couldn’t vocalize before the Wrecker had taken off. A sigh left his vents, and he transformed to speed after the younger mech.
This was going to be a quick mission, and Rodimus was going to make sure of it. He was cold; he wanted to go home.
"Yeah, no kidding. It's like 'joints are gonna freeze off' cold out here. Guess that means we should make this as fast as possible, huh? Please let it be close by.."
When he had asked Rodimus if he wanted to watch an aurora with him, it hadn't even crossed the poor young mech's mind that it had come across as a sort of date thing. The littlest Wrecker would have flailed if he had even picked up on it, but regardless the elder mech agreed to it. At first Hot Shot grinned, but his grin quickly morphed into a pout at the mention of auroras only being in cold places. "Well that's stupid.. Can't they just.. I dunno.. move the poles? Ah well.. I guess next time we'll just have to be more prepared for the cold. Or.. stream it off the Earth internet or something? Up to you, really."
Now that they knew where they needed to head, it seemed like a good idea to head in the direction of the Energon trail as quickly as possible. Quicker they got there, the faster they could go back home and be warm again. The Wrecker kept on speeding, going down the narrow path until reaching a wider opening.
It was at that moment that something didn't quite.. feel right.
Still moving at a speed far too fast to maintain control, the blue mech started to swerve and skid, starting to spin in a circle. "Whoaaaa!" Trying to regain control only seemed to make it worse, which was when he got the bright idea to transform back into root mode. While he finally stopped spinning, now he was on the ground, maintaining his speed as he slid back in the direction he'd come from.
Rodimus was trying his best to just keep up with the younger speedster. Of course, that meant being dangerously close should something happen to either of them. Rodimus had gotten experience driving in these conditions several times. Nothing to brag about, but he knew how to pull out of a slide.
When Rodimus saw Hot Shot pull into a tailspin, he knew it was bad news. Of course, Roddy was aware that the best solution was to turn into the slide, and then pull out, he had no time to relay that before Hot Shot was transforming and also headed straight for him.
"Oh slag-," By the time Rodimus had transformed to catch the smaller mech, he had slid a few feet back, placing him closer to the sheer cliffside that lined either side of their path. He dug his heels in to try to stop them from toppling over the side. It was to no avail, however.
The next thought pushing at Rodimus’ processor was to brace for the fall. Brace for the fall, but protect Hot Shot first. So, on gut instinct, Roddy held tight to the younger mech as they fell. Sure, it hurt like hell to be falling down a cliffside, but hopefully he couldn’t prevent Hot Shot from coming to be too damaged by the time they finally stopped sliding.
Hot Shot had never really experienced anything like this before, and naturally he fell into the panicked aspect people would fall right into. One would typically think to pull away from sliding, but that only made things worse. Had he realized turning into it would have helped, he would've been much quicker to do so.
So instead.. he did what he thought would be the next best thing.. and transformed.
The Wrecker slid right into Rodimus, one part of him excited that he'd been caught by the older mech. Another part, however.. had worried. Rodimus was sliding backwards towards the edge of a nearby cliff, and if Rodimus was hurt because of him? He wouldn't know what to do with that. Hot Shot grabbed onto the red and yellow mech, optics widening they inadvertently went toppling over the edge.
Scrap!
Hot Shot felt Rodimus clutch onto him tighter, as if doing his best to protect the youngster from the incoming crash. It certainly helped minimize the impact on Hot Shot's end, but he didn't get out of it completely unscathed. The worst of it had been dents and paint scratches, but he was the luckier of the two this time.
"RODIMUS!!" The blue mech looked to his friend, fear quickly taking over his processor. This had been his own fault for being so reckless..
