His optics seemed to flicker between a happy yellow, and a faintly sad darker blue, before going back to their neutral cyan hue. His optics half-closed and gave himself a tiny smile. "Sparklings...help." He murmured with a tiny smile. He didn't have the spark to say that he had one on the way and he knew it.
He then gave a soft noise, venting reverently. "Sounds...beautiful." He didn't mind the shy nature. He remembered that Strongarm, despite being adopted, had also been extremely shy. He wondered if...no, that one was gone now, his memory buried in the snows of Messatine.
He closed his optics for a moment, his exhaustion having become too much for a moment. He was still conscious. The light was too strong for the moment.
Sparklings could help? That was definitely a good sign.
With a smile, noticing that Pharma appeared to be growing tired, he dimmed the lights for his adopted sire so that he could rest if he wanted. It hadn't even dawned on him that it was just him being blinded after so much darkness on the Nemesis.
He leaned in close, pressing a small kiss onto his forehelm in a familial manner. Staying close, he then whispered. "I'm going to get Nightshade, but I promise that I'll be back as quickly as possible. You can still ping me if you need to talk, but.. I'm not leaving you. I promise you that much." Squeezing Pharma's servo one last time in a comforting manner, he finally got up and left the room for a brief moment.
Ratchet fended off anyone who tried to get in his way, and did so again when he walked back with Nightshade in his arms. "Get back," he shouted as he pushed his way through. As he heard Nightshade mimic him in sparkling talk, he couldn't help but let out a powerful laugh before entering the medical bay. "That's my good girl~."
He walked back over to the berth where Pharma was resting, holding Nightshade close as he sat back down on his seat. "Nightshade, this is your Grandpa Pharma. He's not feeling well at the moment, but I'm helping him. Why don't you say hello?"
Nightshade was a bit fussy when Ratchet came to get her, but quickly calmed once he had mentioned they were going to see 'Grandpa'. He'd said that word to her so many times, and usually he was sad about it when that word was used, but now? He was happy! That must have been good.
There were so many wanting to see what the fuss was in the medical bay, and Nightshade whined as her papa pushed his way through the crowd. He kept telling them to get back, and eventually the little femme had gotten the idea that if he said 'get back' that they were supposed to move away. She raised a servo and pointed one of her digits in a random direction. "Bak!"
At least her papa thought it was funny.
It was much quieter in the medical bay, and all she could see was someone resting on the berth. They looked really hurt, but her papa was helping them. Oh wait, this was Grandpa? Nightshade looked to Pharma curiously, reaching out with a servo before flailing it as if to wave. She was definitely curious about this one, especially since he seemed to be important to her papa.
Pharma gave a tired smile while letting Ratchet go get Nightshade. He had a lot to say but he was just so weak and unable to handle it. It would take a little while to get the energy back. His optics slowly opened and he vented softly. It was dimmer now, less straining on his optics.
The shout and the laugh made him gave a small smile. He slowly sat up, laughing a little in spite of himself.
"Hiiiii there." He whispered. "Pretty little one..."
Ratchet smiled as Pharma sat up in order to greet Nightshade; The little sparkling waving back in return. At her question, Ratchet then nodded. "That's right, my little one~. That's your Grandpa."
Bouncing his sparkling a little bit, he couldn't help but notice just how much happier his adopted sire seemed to be. When he had said that sparklings had helped, he didn't thing it would help this much. It was exactly what he needed to calm down, and the medic couldn't have planned this any better. In fact, he hadn't planned it at all.
He held out Nightshade so that Pharma could hold her if he wanted to do so, the smile on his face not fading even in the least.
"Would you like to hold her? I think she really wants to get to know you."
Nightshade watched as Pharma sat up, giggling as he greeted her back. She surprised herself by how open she was being to him already, but then again he also looked a great deal like her own papa. Maybe that was why.. She didn't know what a Grandpa was, but that's what Pharma was going to be for her from now on.
Ratchet then held her out, the little femme kicking her legs in excitement as she reached out for Pharma. She wanted him to hold her too, and that way she could get more familiar with him too. Maybe if he looked like her papa, he would hold her the same ways too.
As she reached for him, she resumed her nonsensical sparkling talk, babbling as if she were trying to hold a conversation with Pharma.
"I'd love to." He whispered with a soft smile. Whether it was the energon or the presence of a positive force like a happy Sparkling, Pharma seemed a lot more eager and bright. He didn't add that holding Nightshade would be good practice as he was rusty.
Soon, he took her in his arms, venting softly. She was warm, small, comfortable. His spark was brighter feeling the tiny life that wriggled and spoke. He had half a notion that the newspark within him understood what Nightshade was saying. It practically gave him a stirring of emotion that even seemed to bubble behind the cockpit.
Ratchet let Pharma take Nightshade from his arms, surprised that she was taking to him so quickly. Maybe it had been because he told her who he was long ago, and told her even now that this was her Grandpa. Either way, he couldn't have been happier at the sight of his adopted sire holding his and Wheeljack's daughter.
And then he backfired.
Even the smallest of chuckles escaped from him, and to be honest Ratchet wasn't entirely sure why. Maybe he was just caught up in the moment, or maybe it was even the sound of his little sparkling laughing at the noise.
Nightshade looked up to Pharma as she was removed from her papa's arms, just taking him in. She didn't know just how much being there at that moment had helped her Grandpa, but she could definitely sense his happiness in that moment. Everyone seemed to feel happier when they held her.
It was a little weird..
But maybe not as weird as the sudden noise that came from behind Pharma. The sparkling femme stayed quiet for a moment, trying to figure out what it was, but afterwards she began to shriek with laughter. It just sounded so funny, and it was something her daddy would have laughed hard at too.
There was one other thing that she did notice, however. Something only a sparkling would have. She could sense a frequency that she couldn't quite place, but it almost sounded like.. it was coming from within her Grandpa. With a questioning coo, she rested her helm against his chest, listening in. Something, or someone, was definitely in there. Was it.. a young spark like her? Nightshade greeted it with sparkling talk to see if she could get a response, then looked up to Pharma.
Pharma almost seemed to blush and sputter at the noise. He hadn't meant to backfire like that. Maybe he could pass it off with the excuse of being overcome with emotion? Nah. He probably had that built up in his lines for a while.
He had a flustered blush regardless though, smiling. The truth was, Sparklings didn't judge like adults did and he felt at ease around them--especially Ratchet's. She was a real beauty, that was for sure.
"Little ones are drawn to certain things."
He then blinked. She seemed to have caught onto something that he had been trying to keep hidden but Sparklings knew. Sparklings always knew carriers.
"Yes, little Nightshade. I'm...sorry I couldn't say much earlier Ratchet...there...there is a newspark in there. I...I can't say much more than that. I'm...honestly more wiped out from it than...than from the ordeal..." He closed his optics tight as though bracing for rage. He had gotten used to it while aboard the Nemesis. Kaon was normally softspoken, but when enraged was incredibly SHRILL.
Ratchet continued to watch as Nightshade and Pharma interacted, although things seemed to take a strange turn when his little one seemed to notice something. It was almost as if.. she was listening for something. But how would she have known that? What could she have possibly been looking for?
With the uttering of her word and Pharma's confirmation, Ratchet's optics widened. Pharma was.. carrying! It should have been a happy moment for them, but the news spoke volumes of what the seeker had endured on the Nemesis. His reaction alone only amplified the reaction.
"Pharma.." Ratchet moved closer, wrapping his arms around both the elder medic and his own sparkling. "I.. I'm so sorry.. I want to be happy, and yet I know that this must be painful for you.. I promise I'll do everything I can to help with the carry. We'll make light of this."
Nightshade was incredibly happy to know that she'd soon have a potential playmate, but at least could talk to the newspark in the meantime. There was only so much she could do to teach this one, but she could at least get them caught up.
But.. why was her papa and Grandpa not happy about this? They seemed so sad about it, but she didn't know why. The sparkling tried to pat the both of them, looking up to them sadly. She didn't know what else to do to try and make them feel better. Newsparks and sparklings were supposed to help make others happy, right?
Pharma tried to put a smile back on quickly. However, he knew that they had seen the reaction. The flinch. The fear that he was going to be screamed at and mech-handled.
"I-I-I'm sorry. I should be the sorry one right now...that was important information and..." His optics opened wide and he realized that it wasn't just Ratchet that was worried. Almost without worry he held Nightshade close to him. "I'm sorry for worrying you too little one."
The Nemesis however, was still fresh on his mind. Kaon's shrill tones, Shockwave's sadistic machinations, the flashbacks to Delphi...
"It's not your fault...it's not your fault...it's not your fault...please it's not your fault..."
Ratchet tried to comfort Pharma in whatever way he could. Nothing could have prepared him for this, but he knew that he needed to be there for him right now. If he could have had his way, he would never have let this happen to Pharma at all..
"Pharma... Pharma, please.. I'm.. I'm not angry with you... You've.. you've been through so much that I can't possibly ever hope to imagine the things you've gone through. I'm here.. We're right here and.. we'll figure this all out together. You're safe.. your little one is safe.. I'll never.. let you go through this again.." The medic sniffed, still holding onto the both of them as tight as he could without harming either Pharma, the newspark, or his own daughter.
"I love you so much, papa.. It kills me to see you like this, but I don't blame you for how you feel either.." Papa.. It wasn't a name that he typically called Pharma, but he figured if there was any time to do it, now was the best time.
Nightshade looked up at Pharma sadly as she was cuddled by the both of them. She didn't understand why they were both so sad, but she wanted to help. Raising a servo, she began to pat Pharma's chest in a comforting manner while hoping it would help even a little. She didn't know what else to do.
As her papa spoke to Pharma, she did manage to make out a couple of the words that were said. 'Love you' was something that he and her daddy Wheeljack told her quite often, and 'papa' was just a given. But she was a little confused as to why Ratchet had called him that. Wasn't he 'grandpa'?
Continuing the patting, she looked up to Pharma before looking to his chest once more. "Luvoo Gap. Babu."
