Ping. Warpath hardly even felt the shot, and might've even missed it completely if it didn't make a noise. He glanced down to see a small smudge on his left leg's armor, then back to Chris. He would've berated a normal recruit for discharging their weapon prematurely, especially at one's own instructor. The human was no normal recruit; he's proven that so far.
"BOOM, that's what I'm talking about!" he roared, jovially. Now however was the time for Chris to try his skills out, if he was ready or not. Warpath smashed his hand on the nearest terminal, and a small spherical device extended down from the ceiling. The holoprojector randomly generated a set of terrain and areas of cover on the weapons bay's empty center. Most importantly, it generated holographic replicas of three Vehicon soldiers, their weapons trained on the human...
Chris' optics bulged, backing up slowly as the entire room shifted.
What were these things coming at him? He could only wonder, but it definitely was not going to scare him off, no way no how. He watched them carefully and as the first one fired a volley, pulled one blade out. "Come on, Chris. It's no different than any other gun, you can do this," he muttered under his breath as the second one shot.
That's when he made his move. Moving to one side, he spun around on the first Vehicon and went for the closest appendage - the leg. Using his size to his advantage, he swiped through it, and raised up one of his cannons. The Vehicon didn't know what hit him when he tried to repeat what he'd been doing when the cannon went off the first time. As it went down from the direct slash to its ankle, Chris shot off the cannon, blasting apart its head.
Chris grinned, feeling as if he'd accomplished something. Though he was very quickly knocked back to reality by being backhanded by another vehicon who had come up behind him. He went flying, his blade did too, and now he was staring down two of them. He looked around for a moment - knowing he had only seconds to make his first move, and he'd better make it count.
He wasn't expecting to jump straight into live fire, from the looks of it. Warpath was an awfully impatient bot after all, and with all that boasting of prior training, he was just itching to throw him into the thick of it. He wasn't lying about some of it, as Chris seemed to be handling himself better than most recruits, although that wasn't saying too much. He was thinking and fighting with his weaknesses in mind, specifically that short stature of his; he was like a very pissed off minicon from where Warpath was standing.
His whopping killstreak of one Vehicon was suddenly ended as one of the remaining two sent him spiraling away, leaving Warpath eagerly waiting for the sparkling's next move.
Chris weighed his options carefully, and again thought of his small stature. Then shot there being two of them. He had gathered these guys weren’t insanely intelligent and that was something he could definitely use to his advantage. So when the first one fired, he leapt out of the way and then rolled forward. An action which confused the second one as it put him between the two. This time when it fired he rolled forward again and instead the second vehicon Shot the first through the chest.
Once it was down an the second and remaining hologram was confused. Chris kicked forward, leapt into the air with inhuman strength and blew its head apart too. Knocking it down. As Chris landed on his feet he put his hands on his hips. “Nice try boys, come again,” he said with a wink at the bodies.
Of course, his body took that time to decide now was the time to transform back. Chris’ eyes bulged, oh god, he had nearly forgotten in his excitement he didn’t really know how to control that yet. If Warpath brought more of those up he was screwed.
Warpath watched with interest as Chris suddenly changed out of his Praxian form, unintentionally. That little detail was something they'd need to work on, for sure. For now though, the Autobot switched off the holoprojector, de-materializing both the terrain and Vehicons. He took a few heavy steps over to the sparkling, glaring down at him, "Boom, bam... you're not done already, are you? Change back."
Chris gritted his teeth in frustration, no idea what to do. He had struggled with this and he didn’t want to come off weak. No, he was here to train, and damn it he would get a handle on this transforming thing. As he tried to concentrate hard, his body started to maneuver around, almost as if struggling to get the parts to fit. But Chris pushed harder using more energy than he would have liked, but he’d finally transformed after a moment, falling to one knee with a pant. “Is it always going to be this hard? Transforming back and forth I mean?”
Chris wasn't as inept as Warpath had originally thought, not that he was a fully capable Autobot yet though. He knelt down to pat his chest, blue eyes locking on the boy, "Its a need, a reflex... pow... for some of us we can transform without so much as thinking. But for you? Its an autonomic reflex you have yet to master; like a little human learning to breathe for the first time."
Chris looked stunned at the thought. He couldn’t imagine being able to do it without thinking. But then again, he supposed most Transformers we’re doing this long before he was. Warpath was right, it was like being a baby like that - learning to walk and talk again. Except now as something else entirely. “I kinda, get that feeling too, y’know like there was always some part of me that was missing and the first time I did this I actually felt whole... like a connection to something bigger,” he explained. “But sometimes it’s hard to control. Like when I’m angry sometimes it just happens. So I guess you’re right. Sometimes I feel like I’m a baby back learning the world again.”
He then added with a half grin. “Not that I’m gonna give up. I’m going to master this thing if it kills me.”
"It just might, blam... if you need to transform in an active combat scenario."
Warpath took a step back from Chris, only to fall forwards suddenly. He quickly transformed into his vehicle mode, being that of an M1 Abrams tank. The tank's turret swiveled to meet the sparkling, as if it were Warpath's head.
"The sooner you're able to trust yourself with your abilities, the sooner they'll come to trust you... zowie..."
To say Chris was mildly surprised by the appearance of the tank would have been an understatement. Dang these things transformed into just about everything didn’t they? The thought of active combat was a difficult one for sure, he’d already seen his dad go down in that and the thought definitely made him shudder. “I’m not gonna let that happen... Thats why I’m here. My dad gave up his life so that I survived those, creeps... And I sure as hell won’t die and let him die for nothing,” It was an honest response though lined with a lot of pain.
And he knew only one way he was going to start doing that. So he let his armored robotic form disassemble. “Run me through the simulation again. This time I’m going as a human.”
As a human? So be it, then. Warpath silently agreed, transforming out of his tank form, walking over to activate the holoprojector once again. The drill was largely the same as before: randomly generated terrain, three hostile Vehicons. Except now, Chris had no noticeable abilities or advantages as far was Warpath was concerned. If he truly had the skills to join the Autobots, now would be the time they'd show.
Chris exhausted slowly, knowing the one way that transforming always worked. But first he was going to show wha the could do as a human. He sprinted between the line of fire from the vehicons, letting them fire volleys of shots that he easily dodged as a human. When he finally was at their backs, he used the unexpected, but still there ability he had in human form. He knew his strength was much more than other humans, so he used his body to lift a boulder.
And then he went bowling.
He threw it at their legs. Allowing it to gain momentum quickly until it sent them collapsing to the ground like bowling pins. He knew he didn’t have long, and he definitely needed to act fast so he sprinted. Grabbing the boulder again, he leapt onto one off the Vehicons and based its visor. Cracking it only a little bit but hopefully enough. He took some steps back as the other vehicons started to rise, waiting. As the third one did, he stood perfectly still - perhaps looking like it was suicide.
But the one with the cracked visor did exactly what he wanted it to. The second one of the others moved it fired at it, confused and nearly blinded. Chris grinned a bit, watching at the shock of the other Vehicon. Who realizing its predicament shot at the other. Soon enough the two were exchanging fire - and Chris never had to lift a finger.
They both went down. Exactly as planned. “I uh... have some other talents as a human too,” he shrugged rather innocently at Warpath.
Warpath quietly watched as Chris displayed both tactical and physical skill in dispatching all three of his opponents, despite being merely a human. Instead of impressing the veteran Autobot, the sparkling's performance only drove his expectations even higher. If this was the kind of skill he had after just testing out his abilities for the first time, he must have more up his sleeve.
Without warning, Warpath adjusted a dial on the control panel. The three Vehicons vanished, yet the terrain remained. In their place were spawned six Vehicons, with two being aerial Seekers.
Chris’ eyes bulged as he now saw the opponents in front of him.
It almost reminded him of that one flying robot he’d seen in Jasper earlier. The boy backed up slowly, the grounders would probably go down easily, but those two fliers. He thought of throwing a boulder again, but as he was doing so they fired on him in a volley of shots that nearly sent him flying. Forcing his transformation, he managed to use his swords to dispatch of one vehicon the way he had the firs time. But in that time one of the flyers were already on him. “Dammit!” He gritted his teeth.
One cannon shot out as he attempted to get a shot on them. He clipped one wing but for the first time a blast him from the back sending him flying across the dirt. Dang, failing hurt. At this point he managed to blast one or two shots at the grounders remaining. One, luckily hit it in the visor again. Which caused it to fire wildly, but while the grounders were fighting the two aerial ones were above ground and did not go down so easily.
It took one of them slamming into Chris for him to think of shooting out ones engine, and so he did. Multiple times until it spun out of control Into the other and both went down. But so did Chris, who untransformed and grabbed for his inhaler as he hyperventilated. Finally managing to breathe it in and pull his bruised body to a seated position. “Those drone things can fly too!?”
Yep, he definitely had the right stuff in him alright. Warpath switched off the projection once again, intending to keep it off this time. The Autobot approached Chris, content with what he'd seen today.
"They can, but these drones are hardly going to be your most immediate threat on the battlefield... blang..."
Just then, the holoprojector displayed another set of images, although they weren't simulated targets. Among their ranks were several prominent Decepticons: Starscream, Dreadwing, Shockwave, Soundwave, and lastly Megatron.
"The officers commanding them are too dangerous for you, though."
