Nightshade found herself gently rocked back and forth in Jetfire's arms, if only to keep her preoccupied while the scientist explained his process. He nodded to confirm Ratchet's assumption, "I took a page from Shockwave's playbook, actually. If you recall, Bruticus and Devastator were both dangerously unstable gestalts, born from a creator with a cruel touch. I figured that if I added myself to the equation to understand them from an internal perspective, I could smooth the connections inside the gestalt."
Jetfire paused to look down at Nightshade, then back up at her carrier. "I didn't have access to the original, but I got my hands on a few scans of the original Enigma of Combination before our mass exodus. From them, I had a few insights on how to improve the process."
"I've modified myself to be received by another spark, long story short. The data I've crunched has led me to believe the modifications are stable, but I still need to test it with another bot."
Ratchet was completely stunned to hear what Jetfire had done in order to further his research when it came to Combiners and just how they could come together the way they do. True the Enigma was a key factor, but even now.. there was no way to find it. Certainly it hadn't come to Earth with them, but for Jetfire to alter his own frame just to test if he could do it.
"That's.. a rather extreme measure. So many things could go wrong, but.. I can't blame you. I myself have been tempted a few times to test the Synthetic Energon I have been working on on myself, but.. I've learned that's not the way to go."
He smiled once more as he watched Jetfire rock Nightshade, just the sight of it being so relaxing. "I'm curious to see the results however. If this is successful, this is something huge for us. Literally and figuratively."
Nightshade cooed contently as she was rocked by Jetfire, raising a servo so she could pat him on the chest. As she did so, the sparkling smiled brightly up at him. She wanted to show her appreciation for him rocking her in such a manner, and it was the best she could do since she hadn't learned how to talk in more than babble just yet aside from the occasional word or two.. frequently mispronounced of course.
She had no idea what they were talking about, but it didn't matter to her. The larger mech and her papa had quite an engaging conversation going on, and it didn't seem to be about her.
The little femme yawned as the rocking relaxed her, looking back up to Jetfire as he looked down to her. She was becoming increasingly more comfortable. Comfortable.. and sleepy.
The seeker's wings, normally tucked away neatly behind his back, slowly began to fan outwards as the little Nightshade reached her hand up to Jetfire's chest. If Cybertronians could blush, now would be the time to show it. All Jetfire could do was to gently put his hand over the sparkling's, continuing to rock her back and forth.
"There's still the matter of testing it, of course. In theory, there are two ways I can try; one, by performing a short procedure on the second party to enable their frame to 'accommodate' another. Two, although I'll admit it's a long shot, would be to find a suitable candidate whose spark is already set to bond with another. An artificial combination would take some getting used to for both parties, but there would be no such difficulty with a 'natural' one."
Jetfire'd gone through his data time and time again ever since regaining access to modern Cybertronian science facilities, finding his theories to be sound in simulation. He wasn't some undergrad just trusting numbers though, not anymore at least. Part of the reason he'd been so diligent in analyzing the base personnel roster was to try and find a suitable candidate for combination. Jetfire had narrowed it down with factors such as size, personality, history and more. Those were what was required for an artificial combination, at least. A natural combination wouldn't need any of those factors save for interpersonal history, and an emotional connection of course.
It'd been a long time since he'd seen Jetfire, but it'd been even longer since the last time Ratchet could recall seeing Jetfire so relaxed. For Nightshade to do that so easily.. maybe it was true what they said about sparklings. That they were capable of bringing happiness to others more easily than others. He smiled at the sight of them.
"If that's the case, let's work towards testing the safest method. We'll.. save the alternate until we have no other choice. The question would then be, who would we even choose to be the second party? Autobot combiners aren't all that common, and I don't know if we have any among us." There had been First Aid, but.. just where had he gone off too? He swore his medic student had been here, but it was as if no one else remembered him being here at all.
If only they'd had access to the Enigma.. Though perhaps there was someone they knew that was capable of combining, and they just weren't aware of it yet.
Nightshade watched has her little servo was covered by Jetfire's much larger one. It felt warm and comforting, if not a bit scary due to their size difference. Would she grow up to be his size one day? Or maybe her daddy's or papa's? It was much too soon to be thinking about stuff like that. Being little was perfectly fine.
For now at least.
While she didn't understand what they were talking about, she was curious all at the same time. Combining? What were they putting together? Were they missing a piece? She wasn't going to worry about it much just yet. Nightshade yawned softly as her optics closed, getting much too comfortable in Jetfire's arms.
Jetfire would be rubbing his chin if he had a free hand to do it with, but instead simply shot Ratchet a quizzical look. He'd drawn up countless models with the data he'd acquired, but a gut feeling told him he'd have to go out and search for himself.
"Finding an Autobot who could already combine them self with another wouldn't prove the the naturals theory. If I want to truly prove it, I need to fins an Autobot who is unknowingly a combiner. Should I be successful, I'll have proved that the potential for combination is latent within all Cybertronians..."
The seeker tossed a glance back down to Nightshade, now burrowing into his arms sleepily.
"Truth be told, I had considered Optimus a 'prime' candidate, pardon my pun. Somebody like him, who makes connections with others easily, is a solid choice as far as I'm concerned."
Ratchet rested a servo under his chin as he thought. Someone who could already combine wouldn't be able to work, and the more he thought about it the more it made sense.
"You have a point.. Those that can already combine are only meant to combine with their groups. I don't think it's ever been recorded that two separate combiners were successfully able to mix and match. Would certainly make things easier if that were the case.."
He couldn't help but look to Jetfire as he continued to cradle Nightshade, the little femme starting to fall asleep. It must have been close to her nap time if she was already willing herself to rest with someone she didn't know very well.
"Like Optimus? I think he may be the best choice, Jetfire. I can't think of anyone else who could fit that role, aside from possibly Bumblebee, but he's all the way out in Crown City these days with the others. I suppose we could always contact them if we need to, but I know how busy they are with the group of Decepticons out there."
As Nightshade rested in Jetfire's arms, she found herself dozing off. Her papa was still talking with the other mech, and that was alright. It wasn't something she needed to be worried about at the moment, so for the time being she'd just focus on getting comfortable.
"Jefaaa~."
Attempting to say the other mech's name, she nestled in closer, letting her optics close with a bright smile as she fell asleep.
"Then perhaps I should head over there myself, to-" Jetfire abruptly stopped, having heard Nightshade's attempt at vocalization. She sounded as soft and fragile as she looked, sparkling smooth. He brought his free hand up to cover his mouth, as to not spoil the moment with some pointless verbal response. Jetfire, the scientist / fighter pilot had just been dumbfounded by a sparkling's audio processor. The talk about combination applications could wait, there were more important things to talk about.
He slowly retracted his hand to cradle it around Nightshade again, speaking in a hushed whisper, "Is that her first attempt at speaking...?"
Even Ratchet had been surprised as Nightshade attempted to say Jetfire's name just before falling asleep. The look on Jetfire's face said it all, and it was too precious of a moment.
"She's.. tried to say 'papa' and 'daddy' before, but never anyone's name. You're.. the first one she's tried to say the name of." A smile completely overtook the medic's face as he looked to the two of them. It must have spoken volumes of how safe his little sparkling felt in the seeker's arms if she wanted to say his name. Sparklings were such mysterious creatures when they wanted to be.
It was a naive kind of affection that sparklings gave out, pure and unbiased. Jetfire had never experienced it while he was back on Cybertron, but Nightshade brought up just how much he apparently needed it. The seeker tilted his head back down to the child, speaking softly, "You don't mind that I'm a boring scientist or an ex-Decepticon, do you?"
Nightshade's continued sleep-induced silence was the answer he'd been looking for. "As I expected."
The towering Autobot pushed up off his knee, standing up at full height once again; it looked like Jetfire was taking a liking to her as well. "Do you plan to start tutoring her before Wheeljack makes her an EOD expert?"
Try as he may, there was no way that Ratchet couldn't call the scene before him cute. Jetfire and Nightshade were already getting along so well, and it warmed his spark just to see the taller mech getting a moment like this with someone who didn't know anything about castes and the war. He had the history of being an ex-Decepticon, and there was no way someone so young could judge him for that.
He couldn't help but laugh at the mech's question, however.
"Oh I plan on training her on at least basic medical treatments, but.. in the end I want it to be her choice in what she wants to do. I want her to have the choice that so many of us didn't before the war. If she wants to be a medic, I'll be there to train her. If she wants to be a Wrecker.. Primus help us all." The CMO chuckled a bit more.
"Who knows? Maybe she could grow up and want to be a scientist like you. As long as she's happy and doing what she wants.. Wheeljack and I couldn't be more proud of Nightshade."
As much as he would've liked to just hold Nightshade against his chest for eternity, Jetfire relented. He knelt back down to pass her back off to Ratchet, much to his dismay. Still, he stole one last glance at the sleeping sparkling to take in the pink and blue view. "She certainly looks like she could take after either one of you."
"You take good care of your carrier now, you hear me?" he whispered to Nightshade, a small smile forming on his face. In fact, said smile was stuck on Jetfire's face, apparently. Something about sparklings gave him new hope for their future, although he had to admit he sounded a tad naive to think so. It was a nice thought, regardless.
Smiling softly, Ratchet took Nightshade back into his arms once Jetfire was ready to hand her back over. The little sparkling was fast asleep, and quite relaxed despite the exchange of servos. Ratchet rocked her slowly and gently, allowing the larger mech to whisper to her.
Oh dear..
"Actually.. I'm not her carrier." Ratchet chuckled softly, not wanting to accidentally stir the little sparkling. "Wheeljack is." It was still a bit of an unexpected revelation that Wheeljack had carried despite his spark chamber not being designed to carry, but sometimes Primus worked in mysterious ways. The CMO honestly would not have minded being the carrier, but he was just as happy to take care of his Conjunx while he held their little one's newspark so dear to his own spark.
"If you want.. I wouldn't mind letting you babysit her sometimes. She really seems comfortable with you, but I don't want to put that on you if you don't think you can handle her and your research at the same time."
