Hearing such validation was like finding an oasis in the midst of a cruel and unforgiving desert; it made Spacewarp give an internal sigh of relief. She was pleased that Silent held the same convictions about their leader, and only drove her to discover how deeply they were rooted.
"Things would be going differently. When Starscream took control of the navy, he shifted our combat doctrine away from heavily armed cruisers, and towards seekers themselves."
Spacewarp motioned to the massive cannon mounted on her back before continuing, "He advocated for smaller and more agile weapons platforms, so that we would never have to risk larger vessels along with their firepower. A squadron of my brothers and sisters became as deadly as the cruisers we launched from."
She paused, then went on to say, "For as long as I've been on board the Nemesis, the only major tactical decision I've seen Starscream make is whether or not his Vehicons call him Lord or Commander."
"Such concerns seem lost to the Starscream here, as you seemed to have already noticed." Silentsky agreed, only able to shake her head in disappointment in how dysfunctional the seekers could really be. Their formations and movements weren't bad, but that was about as far as she could really compliment them on. From there things quickly fell apart and it was easy to pick apart what needed some serious overhaul and it didn't take a scientist to know what the sole cause was for their terrible rep.
Once more Silentsky brought her gaze to meet Spacewarp's, "It is presently why I don't mind flying solo, Spacewarp." She told her, not minding in telling her her habits since actually joining the Decepticon ranks in general. "Flying in formation, among an armada...it feels cramped to me, and I feel my maneuverability in flight is hindered when I do not have more freedom to roam." She admitted, always cringing when she watched the flying displays by her fellow Seekers, the ones that flew in a single squadron. She never could understand why fliers would remotely feel so natural in doing so.
"But, I do not foresee a change in the Seeker hierarchy anytime soon unless someone among the Seekers showed Megatron that Starscream is truly unworthy in leading his air forces." Silentsky sighed, less than hopeful a change would be coming at all in the nearest future. The far future maybe, but in the short future...they might as well buckle up and endure Starscream's maniac attempts to show his superiority.
Spacewarp was beginning to feel that Silentsky's sentiment towards their commander wasn't just unique to her; good. The comment about not wanting to fly as part of a squadron stung Spacewarp in her spark, indicative of the severity of the rift that Starscream 'inspired' in his troops. Besides everything else Starscream had done to the Decepticons, she wanted to fix this most of all.
She backtracked a little bit, easing past the change in Seeker leadership for just a moment. "I have no squadron to command here, Silentsky. Would you fly with me?"
Silentsky rubbed her chin in thought at the request. Truth be told, she had never honestly flown with a squadron nor made attempts to fly with others unless it was by chance. No, she had always been a solo flier, a lone wolf in the skies over Iacon and the rest of Cybertron to even here. Much as she wanted to keep it that way there on Earth, it would seem unlikely she could keep such freedoms when this was not an entire planet she was having to cover and shoot or strike at random.
"With you, I will." Silentsky confirmed, but gave a slight shake of her head. "But, do not be surprised if you find me flying around alone Spacewarp; I've always flown solo. I was not Vosian in origin. I was constructed cold, assigned to an undercover unit that were of ground-based Cybertronians and a flier on their team seemed necessary to cover ground where they could not." Silentsky felt compelled to make sure Spacewarp understood where her solo tendencies came from. Because for once, they were no fault of Starscream's. Rather, they were from her days often working alone, long quiet days and nights for her unit, her former family. And it was one habit she had yet to break.
Spacewarp folded her arms and smiled, for the first time since she'd come to this universe, or ever for that matter. She hadn't expected Silent to be one hundred percent on-board with her proposal, but this was a nice start.
"I'm from Nyon, Silentsky; all I understood before the war was how to be the best alone, without relying on anyone else for support. I'd say wings suit me better than wheels, however."
She turned away from Silent, as if moving off towards the hangar bay, before stopping to look back at her. "Of course you won't be the token Seeker along for the ride simply out of necessity with me, however. But, you're still free to fly the way that's best for you."
It was an unspoken gesture, but Spacewarp nodded her head as if Silent should venture to the hangar with her. She wanted to get a better feel for how Silent operated, and a chance to stretch her legs after being cooped up in the Nemesis.
Silentsky found herself actually finding Spacewarp's smile being rather contagious. A smile formed on her face plates, but no one really ever saw her expressions, her face always hidden beneath her face guard and visor. Honestly, it was nice to see someone having a genuine anything on the Nemesis, it just seemed to make the dismal place a little more...homey in a sense. "I find it hard to imagine you with wheels honestly." Silentsky admitted, watching the larger seeker turn away from her.
She expected that their talk was over, seeming as civil conversation rarely lasted long. But she was wrong. Silentsky perked up slightly when Spacewarp spoke once more, actually chuckling softly, "Token or not, I don't quite mind how our flights go Spacewarp. I may not like flying in formation, but I will do so as directed." She assured her, catching the unspoken gesture, following Spacewarp towards the hanger.
"I wasn't always this big, mind you." In fact, Spacewarp used to be even shorter than Silent. She was fortunate that there was nobody in existence who'd seen her attempt to fly for the first time, as the act was unbearably embarrassing.
This was hardly an officially sanctioned mission, more along the lines of a friendly outing, but Spacewarp was fairly certain her companion wouldn't mind at all. "Two seekers is hardly a formation, and given that cloaking field you may just be better off on your own. All that being said however, I'm certain you could catch a few targets by surprise, given they're too preoccupied with engaging the flying laser cannon."
While it was true she normally had a squadron to command, Spacewarp wasn't averse to adapting new strategies. That giant gun mounted on her back made her a prime target in the air, she would know from experience. The added element of a cloaked seeker assisting her would only up their effectiveness.
“Well, you said it yourself-the wings certainly suit you more than wheels. Gives you a more commanding presence.” Silentsky assured her, failing to see in her mind Spacewarp as anything else. Sometimes, a change in frame types seemed to do wonders. But, as they were coming to the hanger, she gave a quick glance to the large gun located upon her back. Indeed, despite the seeker frame no doubt proving an advantage each one has their disadvantages too.
”That is also the point of the cloaking if I work with others. I could easily be a wingman when the time calls for it, a supporting role is just as likely for me as simply doing recon.” She agreed. It was not like she was unfamiliar with what being cloaked on top of other things could prove in the long run. It was usually a matter if someone bothered to want to employ such strategies, which was not often the case. Much less, Silentaky was often working alone to begin with.
Stepping up beside the larger framed seeker, she peered up at Spacewarp and the grin could almost be heard in her voice, “But cloaking is hardly the only thing that keeps other guessing when I fly my larger framed friend.” She added, flexing her wings slightly in anticipation to take flight.
There was something Spacewarp found endearing about her companion's words; perhaps she'd found more than an ally against Starscream in Silent. Was she just good at making friends? No, probably not; she knew just about every Seeker back in her own universe, but not a single one of them would've considered Spacewarp best friend material.
The hangar was reasonably empty at the moment, meaning their little excursion outside wouldn't draw too much attention. "Show me, then," she teased, transforming into her assault jet alt-mode, sinking her struts into the hangar bulkhead. The cannon mounted on her back was only more noticeable now, sitting on her fuselage like a sore thumb.
That was one order Silentsky didn't quite mind following. For all sakes and purposes, she was assuming that Spacewarp would still outrank her to begin with, seeming as Silentsky was not one to seek promotions. She would rather go about doing her job and not have to worry about others under her command, perhaps save for the Vehicons. They tended to be lower in ranks than just about everyone.
Transforming next, Silentsky shifted to her Cybertronain stealth jet form, having never bothered with scanning an Earth alternate mode. Quite frankly, she had seen no need to do so when she could cloak herself with ease and her engines tended to be nearly completely soundless. "See you in the air." Came Silentsky's simple response before she rolled out of the hanger, before shooting off the run way and into the air, barely a hum coming from her jets as she took to the skies.
Spacewarp now understood the significance of Silentsky's name, that being the literal meaning. A pin dropping would have made more of a sound than her takeoff. She herself wasn't so discreet; Spacewarp roared out of the hangar bay, loud as a rocket taking off by comparison. It didn't take long for her to catch up to Silent, cruising right up beside her. She had to admit it felt a little strange flying next to a Cybertronian air frame again, with her current build being what it was. She wondered just how many of this universe's Decepticons had taken Earth forms as well.
"So we have a seeker who moves as silently as a shadow over water, and a flying anti-ship cannon. Dare I say there hasn't been a stranger team." There probably had been, but Spacewarp was new after all.
Silentsky could share Spacewarp's sentiment. She was not use to flying with someone at her side, making her feel odd already. Working alone for so many years it always made her feel off when someone was at her wing or vice versa, and sometimes she had to adapt to what the lead flier was doing, seeming as she tended to fall to a support role every time. But for now, she was present just flying level with Spacewarp.
"Quite the pair aren't we?" Silentsky agreed. They probably couldn't be more opposite to one another than any others. She was smaller and stealthier compared to Spacewarp's larger and louder form, not to mention Silentsky could easily be considered unassuming while Spacewarp gave off a commanding presence as she stated. Being the strangest team probably couldn't be more right in their situation. And for once, Silentsky didn't quite mind that.
The femme even pulled upwards before doing a half-turn in the air to fly upside down, parallel to Spacewarp, "But my silence could prove beneficial to protecting the massive target on your back."
It felt refreshing to no longer be alone at long last; Spacewarp had felt completely alien in this group of new Decepticons. But now she only felt relieved that it wouldn't last forever. If it could be done, Spacewarp would do everything in her power to re-establish her squadron, granted Silent was in agreement as well. But that was a topic for another time.
The seeker slowly started herself in a roll, diving down beneath her companion. Spacewarp ceased the maneuver once their cockpits were in relatively close proximity, keeping herself upright. The entire maneuver wasn't necessarily meant to show off, which Spacewarp only seemed to realize after the fact. An onlooker might've described it as 'cute'.
"I'd hope we get deployed soon, then; put our theories to the test."
"Perhaps sooner or later we will." Silentsky assured her, or trying to at least. She really didn't know if Megatron, Starscream, or any other superiors would see her as fit to going with a squadron of seekers considering her usual role and abilities. True as it was that she was a Seeker, that didn't necessarily mean she would be deemed as worthy of being among Starscream's little armada he had under him.
But she soon barrel rolled to the opposite side she had flown initially at Spacewarp's side and this time in a correct upright position. "But, that does not mean we can't practice." Silentsky pointed out. Perhaps they would not be deployed soon enough to test these theories first hand, but that didn't mean they couldn't attempt to practice some formations. In fact, she even thought of one possible ploy they could use. "To mix it up, I could even ride on your form and shoot at any who come too close. I may not be a sniper, but I could give our enemies a little scare."
It only just occurred to Spacewarp that she was perhaps large enough to accommodate another frame to stand atop her. She'd never heard of such a tactic actually being practiced, or even discussed before. It sounded completely absurd, but that still granted it a chance of working; you couldn't predict something you weren't prepared to consider. The Decepticon nudged herself a bit closer to Silentsky, replying, "Come on and try it, then."
The real question was if Silent could actually maintain her footing while standing on her fuselage, what with the kind of speeds Spacewarp could achieve. Losing the ability to fire her cannon would be a trade off, however. For more air cover it might be a good exchange, but she still had to prove she could pull it off first.
