Save for Shane, Velocitron had no humans, or speed limits for that matter. All of that gave Override the much needed excuse to cut loose. And cut loose she did. The crimson racer was practically tearing up the road behind her as she zoomed down one of her planet's massive tracks, which may or may not have already been hosting a race by the time she entered.
At random intervals of time, Override would suddenly pass another racer on the course; she didn't know how many of her people were even racing at the moment, but it didn't really matter to her. She'd be taking first place, she had to for Shane's sake. She really started to let loose by activating all of her modifications, which had been deactivated since she made the trip to Earth.
Override was making hairpin turns, massive jumps, and looking cool through the whole ordeal. To put it bluntly, both her current speed and manner of driving could have been enough to give a seasoned Nascar driver a heart attack. After making it through a death defyingly large loop de loop, complete with a gap at the top, Override asked her partner, "Having fun in there?"
To say that Shane was having fun was an understatement. To say the least, this was like a wild dream to him. Between being on another planet, and going this fast. Though admittedly he was flopping around a bit, he didn't much care. It was just insanely fun none-the-less. And quite the nice break from the craziness of Earth.
So in response, Shane shouted out loudly. "This is AWESOME! Seriously, is it always like this?"
"Yeah, pretty much!" she replied. The course had taken the racers through more than a few harrowing obstacles, but nothing like what was coming up. "This isn't even an official race, because I'd know about it otherwise! We just do this for fun, mostly!"
By now it was clear that Override had fought her way to the front of the pack, as just about every racer they'd seen thus far was currently fighting for a spot to overtake her. However small it may be, they'd have their chance as the track suddenly hit an unusually large ramp. There was no track ahead of them like it had been behind them, though. Instead of continuing normally, the racers' destination was a large circular tunnel at the end of the jump, leading straight down at a hard angle. It was dimly lit and filled with large spinning fan blades spinning in different directions. Shane was going to love this.
At just less than a 45 degree angle, the racers took to the next section of the race. The rest of the racers each entered behind the leader, trying to wrest away control of the position. Several of them had entered at different angles, leading them to appear as if they were driving along the walls of the massive tunnel, although more than a few were being caught by the tunnel's spinning fans.
She didn't normally ham it up this much, but for Shane... she could make an exception. Override began to slowly turn her front two wheels, taking her out of the straight trajectory she'd been following. Her speed only seemed to somehow increase as the racer began driving in a spiral down the tunnel, passing through the swirling blades effortlessly.
But all the same this was awesome. Was this really just an everyday thing? And not even an official race? Man, these guys knew how to party he guessed! Override was most probably the craziest person he had ever met, but he didn't exactly mean that in a bad way, especially not after this.
After finally managing to catch his breath after the latest death-defying stunt, he heard Override talk again. Looking up, he leaned against the dashboard, and shook his head. "Are you kidding me!? Let's do that again!" He laughed loudly.
The tunnel began to slowly start to slope upwards after a certain distance, now going completely uphill. While a few of the racers had trouble handling themselves on such a steep slope earlier, much more of them were now having a similar problem going upwards. Not everyone else could handle this steep on an incline, and it showed in the several racers who were simply stalling trying to climb it.
Override wasn't having that issue. Her gravmag tires kept her from losing her grip as she ascended, using her jets to push her faster and faster up the ramp. By the time the tunnel ended in another jump, only a small handful of other racers were left, Override included. This last stretch of track was much more level and less dramatic; a good thing, since Override had no idea at what point the human cardiovascular system went into shock from so much force.
"Shane, would you like to learn to drive around here, sometime? I figure if you learn to drive on Velocitron of all places, you'd be a pro when you went back to do it on Earth."
Shane felt a little bad doing that on Earth, also worried the cops would pull him over. But at the same time this wasn’t Earth and the thought of putting the pedlal to the metal? Oh man he loved the sound of that! Licking the edges of his lips. “Oh yeah, hand it over to me Override! I was born for this!” He said enthusiastically.
"Oh you thought... I mean we're sort've in the middle of a dangerous race right now, and I meant teach you later, but I admire your enthusiasm!"
Despite the miscommunication, Override nevertheless switched over to manual control, letting Shane take the wheel. Even though the next few sections of track were relatively tame compared to what they'd just gone through, Override was still going mighty fast.
Shane grinned a bit, middle of a dangerous race? Not like he cared much at all. He was ready to take this on come hell or high water! Taking hold of the wheel, the first thing he did was keep pushing the gas down. Now most people would think that putting a fourteen year old behind the wheel of a car this fast would be instant death. And they were probably right, but Shane didn’t care, he kept the car going as fast as he could allow himself without instant death. Though every new turn seemed to be a struggle for him given he had hardly ever been behind a wheel before. “I’m not afraid of a little supersonic speed racing! I’ll tear this track up!”
Right now probably wasn't the best time for a little fleshy human to try and pilot such a fine and powerful Velocitronian machine like Override, but she couldn't find fault with it due to her own principles. She had to admit to herself that it felt strange being driven by somebody else, less of a bad-weird and more of a new experience-weird. Shane sort of reminded her of herself, learning how to race for the first time, but the only difference was that he had access to all of Override's modifications and enhancements from the get go.
"So long as we don't spin out; I have a reputation to uphold, you know."
Shane kicked the corner of his lip. He definitely wasn’t trhe most graceful driver obviously, but he could at least hope he wouldn’t embarrass her too badly. He could feel the other velocitrons on him, trying to swerve in and out of them as best e could but having some trouble, of course. “I promise I... probably won’t spin out,” he explained with a big grin on his face. “You worry too much Override! What’s the worst that could happen?” Of course now that he said that there were probably a lot of answers.
The other racers couldn't catch up to Override given her immense speed and lead on them, she knew that much. It wasn't the real danger, as the experienced racer knew that a track's hazards were still very capable of taking out a lone driver. She could always snatch back control of the wheel from him if he did anything too dangerous, though.
"We could die, of course. Get crushed by one of the track's obstacles or spin out over the edge and fall to our deaths. It all comes with the territory, though!"
If Shane had a drink he might have spat it out. What on Earth? Was this track that hazardous? What had he gotten himself into? These were all questions he inwardly asked himself. But pretty soon was verbalizing. “Whoa are you sure you really want me doing this? The last time I was behind the wheel of a car that wasn’t you I crashed into a tree!” Shane noted rather nervously. It was of course an honest question.
He wasn't taking the pressure well, which wasn't out of the question when you're racing for the very first time. There were a lot of things Override would've told a younger racer to steady their hand, but Shane was no Velocitronian. As such, it might be better if she took a more subtle approach geared specifically for him.
Override's holomatter avatar materialized in the passenger seat beside him, now made of proper hard light. Lori reached over to rest her hands on Shane's shoulders.
"You'll be completely fine, Shane; just trust the road, and your heart."
Shane nearly jumped out of his skin. Man sometimes he forgot that she had one of those avatars, obviously. But he tried to take a deep breath as she said that. She was probably right after all, she was the car and given she was for all intents and purposes his guardian he really doubted she’d let anything happen to him.
So instead he pushed harder on the gas. And let whatever adrenaline he had overtake him. It wasn’t long before he was flying over one of the obstacles, which although First was a bit of a scary sight. Was pretty awesome when he finally landed on the other side. “Whoa! This is intense! I’m loving it! We should do this kind of thing on Earth,” he shouted a little bit more into it now that he had passed one obstacle.
