Character Name:
Steamhammer
Allegiance:
Decepticons
Appearance Description:
Constructicons aren't known for their looks, and Steamhammer is no exception. Big, bulky and built for utility, there's little about the Decepticon quarry excavator that says 'subtle'; Steamhammer has the physique to handle even the heaviest of loads and the toughest of blows. Being constructed cold, his body has largely remained the same throughout his entire operational life cycle. The most prominent feature in both of his modes is his massive excavator arm, which sits on his back while untransformed. Said arm can be split in half up the middle and worn around both of his regular arms, acting as a pseudo exoskeleton to enhance the strength of his blows. Since arriving on Earth at Megatron's behest, Steamhammer has taken the form of a massive RH400 excavator, which in turn puts him at a whopping 60 feet tall while not in his alt-mode.
Personality:
If one expects all massive Decepticons to be walking piles of anger and oil, they'd find themselves stumped upon meeting Steamhammer. A rare mixture of both brains and brawn, he is significantly more level-headed than many of his Decepticon comrades. He owes this trait to his low-energy personality and rampant cynicism, a fact that tends to annoy some of Megatron's more devout followers. This attitude even extends to the Autobots, making Steamhammer among the few Decepticons who doesn't outright hate them.
Underneath all the sass and cynicism, Steamhammer is reasonably amicable, especially for a Decepticon. He lacks Starscream's hunger for power, Shockwave's thirst for knowledge, and Soundwave's cold and detached nature; in short, he is an oddity among oddities. While he will still follow Megatron's orders without question, he knows the difference between the Autobots and the Cybertronian Senate that imprisoned him. Still, he'd much rather be blowing the heads off of senators instead of Autobots.
Strengths + Weaknesses:
Heavy Duty - Steamhammer was constructed to deal with some of the heavier aspects of the job, in addition to his position as a foreman. His frame has been reinforced several times over to accommodate stresses that would shatter other bots.
Expert Engineer - Megatron is flush with bots ready to design death rays, cyber plagues or whatever else he needs to bring ruin to the Autobots; this leaves the area of physical engineering all to Steamhammer. Capable of tackling complex engineering problems thanks to his time as a foreman in Galaxxon, Steamer is the go-to Decepticon for the construction of planetary and orbital facilities, power grids, and even starships.
Dedicated - Though he might not be shouting Megatron's name from the rooftops, that doesn't make Steamer any less dedicated. Put through a gauntlet of physical and mental tortures under the authority of the old Cybertronian Senate, he knows the importance of change through any means possible.
Slow - Rip off any bot's legs, tear off their tires, and they'll still beat Steamhammer in a race. The Galaxxon isn't designed to get anywhere quick, in either of his modes. A separate transport ship is required to move him from place to place in a timely manner. He is also horrible at dodging.
Cynic - No speech, regardless of how hard hitting or grand, can move this behemoth. Steamhammer lives life for the simple things, and of course establishing equality for all Cybertronians the hard way. He isn't one to give trust out in exchange for promises or power, and often assumes he's never being told the whole truth.
Low Energy - The only thing inspiring about Steamer is his size and power. His personality, not so much. He does a poor job at invigorating those under his command, and has a low drive to rise up through the Decepticon ranks, content with what he has.
Abilities:
Pugilist - Whenever he was given downtime from a job, Steamhammer would hit the ring. While not as large as the gladiator pits of Kaon, the Galaxxon fight club was enough to satisfy Steamer. Before the revolution, the foreman was the five time reigning heavyweight champion, capable of outfighting bots at his size or larger. Steamer is a master boxer and hand to hand fighter, opting to use his fists instead of swords, hammers or blades.
Buildmaster - During the war, Steamhammer was modified by Shockwave with the Enigma of Combination, enabling him to form his own combiner team alongside the likes of Devastator. Acting as a reserve torso for the main Constructicon combiner team, Steamer eventually formed his own team consisting of himself, Gravedigger, Hightower, Quickmix and Wideload; together they formed Buildmaster, the discount Devastator. Most if not all of Steamer's team was left to die on Cybertron following the Exodus, where they battled the Autobot holdouts alongside Devastator and Bruticus. Steamhammer still retains the capability to combine with other Decepticons, but likes to think that his talents in engineering are more useful.
Weaponry:
Kingbreakers - Steamhammer's affectionate name for his hydraulic lifting system, or better known as his excavator split in two. Once mounted on his arms, the Kingbreakers magnify the Decepticon's strength by a factor of ten, enabling to rip or punch even the strongest Autobots in half with his bare (bear) hands.
Laser Cutters - A holdover from his days on Cybertron, Steamhammer's arms are each mounted with a set of high precision laser emitters designed for pinpoint metal cutting. They have a tendency to slice through enemy armor, as well.
Zero Point Energy Matrix - In the event of an industrial accident involving an object of which even Steamhammer can't lift, he has been outfitted with a ZPEM, enabling him to create a small gravitational field in order to capture and hold said object. He enjoys using it to toy around with both Autobots and the occasional pesky coworker.
Twin Boltcasters - Nails, pointy and industrial-sized. While not the most elegant of weapons, Steamer's main ranged weapons are a set of two industrial grade nailguns, each more than powerful enough to impale their targets.
History:
Steamhammer was constructed cold in the Cybertronian city-state of Galaxxon, to no surprise. He was built to act as an engineering foreman on one hand, and to act as extra heavy muscle on the other. Before any major project would begin, Steamer was often the first bot the architects consulted about structural and mechanical feasibility. He was less abrasive and more of a people person than many of his coworkers, and generally well liked by all of them, which made him an excellent foreman in his own right. He even gained a bit of fame by using his impressive stature to win dozens of semi-legal boxing matches held beneath Galaxxon's slag works. All in all, Steamhammer had a pretty decent life.
When Sentinel Prime began clamping down on all aspects of Cybertronian society in order to stamp out various dissident elements, his decent life ended. The Constructicons were frequently targeted as suspected insurgents and vandals by the Senate, often being made an example of. Steamhammer in particular was targeted due to his physical power and the sway he held among his men, despite not partaking in any revolutionary activity whatsoever. At the height of the Cybertronian police state he was captured and tortured for months to reveal the names of any and all Constructicons that held ties to Megatron, and was very nearly given Empurata treatment.
It was only the escalation of the war and the timely rise of the Decepticons under Megatron that allowed Steamhammer to escape, and promptly behead his captors, quickly aligning himself as a Decepticon. He soon found himself reunited with many builders from his original crew, and after the Constructicons were modified by Shockwave, was able to combine with them to form the mighty Buildmaster. True to his name, Buildmaster was responsible for many of Megatron's heavy engineering projects throughout the course of the war, from building fortresses to tearing them down.
By the time of the great Exodus, Steamhammer and his Constructicons were unable to make it off planet, and instead spent the rest of their time trying to stamp out the Autobot Remnant under Shockwave's command. As Cybertron slowly began to freeze and die, Steamhammer and his remaining troops stole a dry docked vessel from the Galaxxon Ironworks, flying it to the stars. His crew drifted apart mostly, eventually leaving Steamer the lone Decepticon remaining on his ship, the Admonisher.
Steamhammer eventually found his way back to Megatron's command, this time on Earth as an engineering specialist. Contrary to the attitudes most Decepticons held towards humans, Steamer largely viewed them as noncombatants, and left them alone. Due to his sheer size however, Megatron has kept him off the Nemesis for the most part, preferring to use him as an agent on the ground to survey locations for potential new Decepticon bases.
