Jeff felt every inch of his body, breathing heavily as he examined the room. It was a simple one for now - but one he was still adjusting to. One he almost completely forgot about due to the nightmare. The cold steel, the crack of a weapon, he clutched his eyes and tried to calm himself down. Trying to remind himself he was safe, it had been a nightmare Jeff. He wasn’t there and he wasn’t going to hurt him.
He’d found out soon after Magnus managed to move him in for his safety that his former guardian had dropped his legal guardianship, thank god. It helped him relax a little to know he was somewhere safe, and with someone who seemed to care, but still. The last few weeks had been a whirlwind of emotions as he tried to adjust to new surroundings for the fourth time in his life.
He climbed out of bed, slipping on a jacket over his PJs. He knew he wasn’t getting back to sleep soon, no, he needed a distraction first. And he already had an idea of how he could get one. A base like this had to have a shooting range, right? Where he could relieve some of that tension and stress?
He slinked out of the door to his quarters, determined to find out. So long as no one caught him out this late at night. Given he definitely didn’t want to worry Magnus, his self appointed guardian had enough on his plate.
Tonight seemed to be the night of nightmares. Not one but two individual had awoken in fear.
Arm thrusted into the air, fist curled, arm rolled a tad, panels sliding open, an empty weapon's rack shifted out. Click click click click click click click. The foiled attempt to shoot the ceiling was caused by the sleeper removing their weapons.
Krrr krshk. Her respirator forced air into her lungs once more before she slumped back onto her berth. Clunk. She couldn't help herself, these night frights. She lets a servo plunk onto her head and groaned, "Fragging awake now"
She just gave up on sleeping and rose up. A quick change of respirators from one for sleeping and the other for everyday activities. Then her helmet to ensure it is properly secured. No weapons on her being. She rose out of the berth like it was habitual at this point.
What wasn't habitual was her starting to wander the halls after her fright. Instead of going outside to fly. What compelled her to linger around these empty, low light halls.
She gently brushed her shoulder against a corner and made a clunk sound as a result, eyes on the ground listlessly watching her steps. She had yet to realize who else was in that very hall she had turned into.
Mostly, Jeff just wasn’t used to others being up this late. But he reminded himself he had met his own guardian late at night - escaping from a confrontation with a gang who’d been arrested now no less. He rubbed his eyes tiredly, hoping he wasn’t breaking any rules being up so late. There were other kids and “sparklings” on base - did they have a curfew? Or was he just allowed to come and go as he pleased now that he lived there like the Autobots were for the most part.
The boy stretched a bit and decided it was better off to play it cool as he started down the hallway. Though it didn’t take him long to notice Rotor though at first he did look startled to realize it hadn’t been from any of the other rooms. “Oh, sorry - almost didn’t see you there,” he half murmured still very sleepy. “I uh... Was just taking a walk.” He explained, in case he needed one.
Again he wasn’t sure - seeing as he didn’t know all the rules yet. So there was a bit of nervousness in his voice.
It wasn't her intention to spook the human. No. She was just lurking about with mindless feet taking her all over the place. Just to walk out of her nightmare. She barely came to a stop when she finally noticed Jeff in all of these halls.
She looked down at him while holding an elbow, of the arm with the panels that slid open and an empty weapon's rack rose up. She doesn't bother to fold it up for now, "A walk... mind if I join?" Her voice was low. Maybe not to wake others? Or was it that her motivation wasn't there. "At least I will have someone to keep me company tonight."
She was sure there was a curfew for silence. But that didn't mean they could wander about and get some exercise. So her respirators were all that were making noises, aside from her feet dragging.
Keeping him company? Was that really a good idea? That was, he didn’t care too much either way. But he wasn’t used to anyone actually wanting to join him at night like this. He put his hands in his pockets slowly, he didn’t want to really bother her with his problems. He figured that she had plenty of them and would probably find some kid having nightmares to be really silly.
But then again he didn’t want to be alone either.
He’d spent a lot of time alone after all. And in a way the company might help him relax, maybe even help himself calm down. He sighed a bit, swallowing a little as he nodded. “Sure I don’t mind. At least as long as you don’t mind my brooding,” he explained. “I had a kind of... A bit of a rough night honestly. What about you? What are you doing up this late?”
She felt his eyes on her and she looked at him, "W-what?" She shook her helm afterwords, humans are sure weird. Though, maybe not so bad once you know them.
She kept her arms crossed while she took small steps to stay with Jeff, not wanting to out pace him during this weird night. Why does everything have to be weird now? Maybe she was overthinking it.
Yeah she was overthi- She turned her helm to him as he spoke. A gentle nod came from her before she sighs, "Brooding... rough night?... For me being up. I err.. Almost blasted a hole in my ceiling in my sleep." She looked at her arm and slid open some panels to show an empty weapon's rack. "I take my weapons off before sleep, or else"
Well she didn’t seem too bad at least. Though he could tell that the femme probably noticed his staring. Looking away for a moment he placed his hands back in his pockets. He really didn’t want to look weird, it was bad enough that he stood out like a sore thumb with his leg after all. Though he definitely felt as though he want helping much with his awkwardness. “Oh it’s uh, nothing. I’m just not used to having anyone to walk around with,” he explained. “Typically not a lot of people pay much attention to me. Usually I kinda blend into the background.”
He nodded his head a bit.
Well that made sense then, she was having the same issue. Or at least he could imagine, no one just shot a hole through their wall in the middle of the night. “Yeah, I uh... I didn’t exactly have a great life. Sometimes it comes back to me in nightmares is all,” he shrugged his shoulders, not thinking much of it. “But dang putting a hole through the wall? Something must have spooked you too!”
He looked thoughtful. “I just hope Ultra Magnus doesn’t hear me up. I really don’t want to worry him.” He admitted - still keeping an eye out for his guardian as best he could.
A deep breath was heard and she expected a lecture or a talk about something, or perhaps something to be revealed. So she waited quietly, accidentally stubbing her pede against something. That made her shuffle out to the center of the hall.
"Hey... Are you a sniper or scout? Don't feel the need to blend in. You can always stand out. That what makes you memorable." She glanced at her arm with the panels sliding open to reveal a weapon's rack pushing up. Nothing on it still.
Now that helm turned to him before she gestures to the tube leading to her mask, "This isn't exactly for show... Jeff? Some Insecticons gave it to me." Just what did the Insecticons do to make her wear that?
Now her vents picked up in pace when she hears about Ultra Magnus. Seems she stood straighter now, "Wait, Ultra Magnus? What is he... your partner?" Curious little(big) femme got some spark in her voice now.
A sniper or scout? Well, he couldn't lie and say that didn't sound fun. Because it definitely did - but the answer was, of course, no. "Well, no. I just... Where I came from for a while standing out was a bad thing," He explained honestly. Thinking of his old guardian especially. "I don't know, maybe here it isn't SO bad."
The boy tilted his head at the mention of the appendage. Honestly, he'd thought it was just there to look cool, he hadn't even thought of that. "Really? That's... Wow," he shook his head. "What's an Insecticon though?"
He wasn't sure he'd talk about his own nightmare... At least not yet.
Jeff raised his eyebrows, why did she act like that? Did she have a crush on the mech or something? He looked a little nervous now - not really sure how to describe their relationship at the moment. "It's kind of complicated. I guess he's sort of my partner and sort of my guardian?" He explained. "He got me out of a bad situation - let me stay here... He's been taking care of me ever since."
He rubbed the back of his neck a little. "It's been a little bit of adjustment really. I haven't really had anyone "taking care of me" in a long time. So I kind of hesitate with the "G" word though." He wasn't sure what Magnus would think of that after all.
A simple nod was given at how he said about not being so bad blending in here. She'd recommend putting his best features out there till it was an annoyance, then people remember you more! Though she stopped short of that suggestion when he shook his head at the respirator, right that... Best to let allies know just incase, "Yeah... really. Insecticons are multilimbed creatures that care not to the lives they lay waste to. So just spew toxin fumes" She even jabbed a thumb to her chest.
A moment of just jabbing herself led her to wonder on what damage it could do to organics, "Jeff, if you ever see them and I am around. You are riding in my cockpit. No ifs ands or buts" There she fell silent as she walked with him, letting him imagine as to why that was the case.
She did however try to dodge what she had just did. Such excitement for him. Under her mask she could feel her vents picking up to cool herself off. "So guardian... You see him often. What is he like, if he took you in.. He can't be that bad"
Jeff definitely did not like the sound of Insecticons already. They sounded, well, gross and probably even a bit scary if he needed to be in someone’s cockpit. Though he wasn’t overly afraid for it anyway, Jeff liked the fancy himself a tough guy - even if he wasn’t always the tough one, or at least didn’t seem to be. “Yeahhhh I think I’d be ok going through my whole life never seeing anything like that,” Jeff said putting up his hands with a small chuckle. “All I can imagine is a giant toxic bug. And I’m ok with bugs but that sounds gross and creepy!”
Oh man - she sounded like she had a crush.
Rubbing the back of his head as he tried to think of what to say. How did he actually describe Magnus. “Yeah I see him quite a bit because of it. He’s pretty cool, a little strict but he treats me well and all,” it was an honest point. Magnus was strict - no doubt about that. “But he’s a lot better than most of my guardians have been. Does his best to make me feel comfortable and all. And I think he understands me a bit - what with us both having artificial limbs.”
She recalls some Insecticon designs now due to their talk. That made her jets pick up a bit of noise in how much more air was sucked in. She didn't bother to take notice it right away. Instead she did notice that a slight fidget of the fingers along her hip skirt was shown. For the moment she tried her best to focus her mind on Jeffrey before her.
Even more focused was her attention on the talk of Magnus, "Well... he was in command of the Wreckers for a time. Maybe his experience with the Wreckers is what you actually needed? I know for sure he has good skills!" Her helm turned to see the limbs of Jeffrey, watching, "Understanding comes from experience and comfort follows suit. You two may be closer than you might expect."
He supposed a lot of Autobots might not get what he meant. Magnus did, but just how common were artificial limbs? He didn’t feel like pulling back his pant leg right now - so he basically explained if. After all, a lot of people were weird when they saw his metal leg. “I uh... I’m sure you’re wondering what I meant by artificial. When I was born I didn’t have a left leg,” he explained honestly. “My parents weren’t rich but they got me anpristhetic one when they had the money. Basically works the same, but I’ve always walked with a slight limp because of it.”
Moving on to what she had said about Magnus though - he had to think about it. Maybe he did have the experience he needed. But at the same time he wasn’t entirely sure. He found it hard to put his trust in people, because a lot of them let him down. But he was genuinely trying to give Magnus a chance at being what he needed. “I don’t know. I’ve heard that a lot and I don’t like getting my hopes up,” he then added. “I’m just enjoying the ride right now. It’s cool being around giant robots if anything. And I needed friends that aren’t straight out of America’s Mosf Wanfed. I almost got involved in a gang, long story.”
