They never should have let Cal on base.
So far, these aliens didn’t seem too bad. But after the initial disappointment of them knowing nothing about his parents - his mind was on one thing: exploring! I mean, heck, it wasn’t every day you got to be on a base with aliens. And these ones were nothing like he had expected either! No little green men or flying saucers. They were a lot more militaristic and cool - heck they turned into cars! And were giant... and a host of other crazy things.
His exploring so far had turned up some weird stuff. Such as their idea of familial units, of which there were a lot on base. He was still trying to wrap his head around robots giving birth to kids. Heck he was still trying to grasp how they had families not unlike their own - let alone that Dylan of all people was living with one of these families. Why did he get so lucky to get to meet other lifeforms first?
Oh well, he was happy for him - he guessed. Dylan had wanted a family for as long as he knew him. But he couldn’t help but feel the sting of jealousy that he was getting first hand intel like that. Not that he yet realized his own need for one yet, he still had made up in his mind that his parents were out there, somewhere...
He had no clue that day was going to start changing that.
The med bay seemed quiet enough when Cal snuck in which was a good thing. Dylan had already been through how his older brother was an acquired taste with a grumpier side. Cal didn’t know him yet - he hadn’t yet made contact with the individual - but what he didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him. Besides he figured the fancier alien tech was in here and that was what he really wanted to see. So far he wasn’t too disappointed - there were plenty of strange, alien devices to be found after all.
“Man this stuff is beyond what I even imagined,” he murmured. Also noting the Cybertronian-sized versions of human tools like wrenches around too as he stared around in wonderment. “And I can’t blog a word of this! Good grief! Why does the world torture me like this? People would eat this up!” He told himself rather exuberantly.
Oh well - at the very least he’d know and that was good enough for him.

Ratchet himself had been in his office just on the other side of the medical bay when Cal had come in. He really needed to get his files re-organized, especially when he had been missing five months worth of data on his patients to begin with.. He'd had to check with Pharma and Blizzard to get data on his patients just so he could have an updated record, but he was in a better place now.
Not just file wise, but mentally too.
He had only just started to put things away when he heard a shout from the medical bay. Grumbling, he got out of his seat and went to check what all the commotion was about.
A human?
At this time of year?
At this time of day?
At this part of the Autobot base?
Localized entirely in his medical bay?
Oh he didn't think so!
The CMO approached the human, a hint of annoyance on his face primarily from the shouting alone. "Just what do you think you are doing in here? These pieces of medical equipment aren't meant to be toyed with!"

Cal jumped.
Coming face-to-face with one of the mechs he’d one day credit to raising him in his later years for the first time was... Not what you’d expect. No bells and whistles went off, no sparks flew and no feeling of connection happened. Instead. It was more internal disappointment that he’d been caught by someone! Dangit he couldn’t do anything without getting caught could he? Who was this guy anyway? He looked like a medic - probably owned the place, complete and utter buzzkill.
And instead of respect, he immediately responded with... “Uh, then you’d think you’d keep the door closed if you didn’t want anyone touching it, wouldn’t you?” In a rather matter-of-fact manner. “Like no offense but you’re giant bio mechanical beings. And the keypad with incripted tech and a password only you know is not a novel concept for things you don’t want touched.”
He put his hands in his pockets, taking a few steps forward. “I’m really just admiring it though. Not every day you see tech from aliens. Honestly I’d kill to get my hands on some of it. Study how it works,” he then added rather curiously. “Hey you probably work with this stuff all the time! How does it work? Does it run on mechanics? Fluids? I figure you guys have got Energon so it’s probably a combination of both. But...”
Cal stopped himself. “Sorry I’m totally going off on a nerd rant again. Name’s Callum. You can call me Cal,” he then added. “Wait! I know you. You look like an ambulance. You must be Dylan’s uh... Brother? I think he mentioned his dad was a Jet and I’m not seeing wings...”
Continuing he added. “You’re older than I was expecting but maybe that’s just because he mostly hung out with me and the other kids back in the foster home.” He shrugged.
