Characters:Grimlock, Russell Clay Location: Vintage Salvage Depot for the Discriminating Nostalgist Content Warnings: N/A Plot Summary: While Denny Clay is away, Russell and Grimlock will play. But what kind of mischief can a boy and a dinobot get into in a scrapyard?
After Russell waved goodbye to his dad and watched the truck drive off. After his father was out of sight, he let out a sigh of relief. He loved his dad, but sometimes hearing Denny get all worked up about his junk and scrap was a little tiresome. It was like dealing with a reluctant leader trying to think of a catchphrase, an overeager rookie who was a real rules lawyer, or a little robot with obsessive tendencies.
Okay, the dinosaur probably had his own hangups.
But Russell thought T-Rexes were cool! And it was the T-Rex that he wanted to hang out with and play games with. Or maybe watch movies with. Or act like they were re-enacting Jurassic Park in the scrapyard. Actually, that last one sounded fun!
While everyone else had gone out, Grimlock was left to his own devices for the most part. He knew that Russell was still here with him, but he wanted to try and surprise the human child before going over to greet him.
He'd been toying with the idea of how to easily disguise himself without resorting to switching to a vehicle mode as opposed to being a Dinobot. He loved that part of himself, and he refused to change it without the best reason in the world.. and even then he'd be reluctant. The Dinobot thought to himself, staring at a pile of assorted vehicle junk that Denny had lying around. What could he do this time? Grimlock changed into his Dinobot form, using his hands and his tail to stick a few wheels onto himself.
As Russell called out to him, he felt rushed in response. "Just a sec', Russell. I gotta surprise for ya!" Affixing the final piece he needed, he rolled himself over to the front, grinning a bit.
"Look! I got a vehicle mode now. I'm a 'monster truck'. Heheheheh!!"
Russell himself seemed to be looking around. Now, how could a giant robo-dinosaur get lost in a scrapyard? Very easily apparently. Then again, sometimes his own dad got lost in his mountain of wonderful, colorful junk.
Ahem. Vintage salvage as his dad would probably call it. After all, it was the Vintage Salvage Depot for the Discriminating Nostalgist, right? But Russell? He had a more black-and-white view of this stuff. Junk. Pure junk. But that was alright. Junk was his dad's passion like sleight-of-hand magic was Russell's passion.
He blinked when he heard Grimlock. "Oh! Okay!" He was going to wait patiently...patiently.
WAIT WHAT THE HECK?
That was when he couldn't help but bust out laughing. "Looks like you're going to be a smashing success at that."
Oh Russell was in for a real treat once Grimlock had finished with his little surprise. Quickly he placed wheels and small car decorations on his frame, grinning at his completed work. While others might not be as fooled by something like this, it didn't stop the Dinobot from trying. And if it amused Russell, all the better, right?
He rolled right on out from his hiding spot, his grin growing that much more as he allowed the young boy to gaze upon the most 'intricate' monster truck he'd likely seen in his entire life. He certainly took to it well, even going as far as to make puns about this new disguise. The Dinobot roared with laughter, allowing himself to roll a little back and forth.
"Smashing's what I do best! Well.. next to punching of course, but you know me."
Looking around for a moment, he discarded his disguise before transforming back into his root mode. He'd put the stuff away later, but right now he just kinda wanted to have some fun. "So, Russell. When ya gonna show me some of that football?"
Russell himself couldn't help but be excited. Even if it was the most obvious design in the world, it was absolutely hilarious, and absolutely fit Grimlock's personality. So much so that Russell hadn't been able to help but make a pun. What was a miracle though was that he had managed not to do the voice of the cartoon character that would have driven his father a little batty. Nigel something-or-other. Berrybush? Thornbush? Thornberry? Nah, couldn't be the last one. What the heck was a thornberry anyway?
"There's no arguing that, Grimlock!" He seemed to gush. "I mean, I've seen what you do to Decepticons!" Now that had been something he loved watching. Grimlock kicking aft and taking names. Not that he was sure what an aft was.
Football? He'd almost forgotten! "Oh! Lemme go get it! But first...American football or International football?" That would determine what kind of ball he got. American? That was the football that came with TOUCHDOWN and the silly touchdown dances. International? That was soccer. He'd called it international football during his time with his mom. "'Cause I can show you both. And I can kind of show it on TV as well as show you what to do here."
Grimlock couldn't help but chuckle. Little Russell had seen many a skirmish between him and the Decepticons lurking around the area. Steeljaw, Filch, you name it. He'd do anything to keep his friends safe from harm, and if that meant knocking down a few 'Cons, then that's what he was gonna do.
"Oh, you bet! I'm the punchin' master!"
But oh was he excited to be learning more about this sport of the young Clay. He'd seen him practice various football techniques, and had learned a little more about the game himself from his basic teachings. Now he knew for certain that the ball did not actually have a foot on it, but that you were meant to.. carry the ball? Not even a kick, save for specific times that made no sense to the Dinobot.
"I think I like that TV idea of yours, Russell. Why don't'cha show me some of that football."
Russell grinned. A punching master, huh? Maybe, just maybe he'd have to find a big opponent for Grimlock to punch. He would do it but, well...he was only a very squishy human boy and Grimlock was bigger than a massive truck.
"And I bet your favorite drink is...punch?" Russell just wanted to make a terrible pun. Hopefully Grimlock was amused by it.
He then tossed the football between his hands. "Oh, not just football. I should show you wrestling too! I think it's on, and I think Ice Cold Steve Dallas is facing against The Boulder for a title tonight!" He winked. "Oh! and I think that boxing is on too. That's a lot of punching! Oh, and Mixed Martial Arts too..."
The poor Dinobot was confused by Russell's statement, but he didn't want him to feel bad either in the event that this was some cleverly crafted joke! He chuckled, grinning like mad as he looked to the small human. "You betcha! I have it all the time!" What was a punch drink, anyway?
He listened to Russell explained that there were other things that they could watch aside from football. There was wrestling, which he sort of knew was a type of fighting. He didn't know what an Ice Cold Steve Dallas was, or why he was fighting a boulder, but the idea alone sounded awesome! Punch that boulder into smithereens! The boxing, however.. threw him for a bit of a loop. Russell said it involved a lot of punching, but what did that have to do with boxes?
"Boxing sounds fun! I wanna try it now!" Grimlock reached for the nearest box, pulling it closer to him and the child before throwing a single punch at it. "Am I doing it right?"
Russell put his hands on his hips. He just had to keep that joke train going, bring it into the "station". "So, would that be...fruit punch?" He swiped up a banana, and punched it. He then shrugged, peeled, and started eating it. No use wasting good fruit.
Oh how he loved the awesome matches that his favorite wrestlers were in. He hadn't even mentioned his favorite tag team, the Sherlocks, or their rivals, the Edgy Christians. Russell had just gotten so passionate while talking about wrestling that he'd almost forgotten that he'd mentioned boxing until Grimlock punched the box. He then started laughing and suddenly winked.
Grimlock grinned, although sadly he did not get the joke. At least, that was until Russell beat up on the poor, lone banana. At least.. he thought he got the joke? "Ha! Just like that." Take that, fruit! Now if only there were a fruit big enough for him to punch. Shame there weren't any giant peaches or something similar in this salvage depot that may or may not be a scrap yard.
He watched the show along with Russell, grinning the entire while. He really wished he could join in the ring with those guys, show them how Dinobots get it done, but alas that wasn't to be. Robots in disguise and all.. Still, one could dream.
The box would have to do for now.
"Box-boxing..? But what is it without the box then?" Poor guy still had a lot to learn about this world.
Russell chuckled, still munching on his banana. "Just like it." He himself couldn't help but snicker. He would then stuff the last of the banana in his mouth and look to Grimlock cheerfully.
He was still laughing brightly at Grimlock until he heard the question. "Just plain boxing." He then paused. "I should show you what Boxing is like on TV!"
What was boxing then if it didn't involve using a box? Humans were just so weird when it came to naming things. Wait. Did that mean that they used circles or something? Thankfully Russell was going to show him what this boxing thing was, and then the mystery would be solved once and for all.
"Ooh! You gotta show me Russell. You gotta!"
If he had been in his Dinobot form, he would have been wagging his tail extra hard, so instead he found himself bouncing up and down before finally sitting down. He was so excited to finally get to see what this boxing thing was.
Oh, he had a plan. He would set the TV up, adjusting the antennas and turning the channel. Soon, an image of two men punching each other in a squared ring would be shown. He seemed to be watching intently.
"Now this. This is boxing." He grinned. "See, they're punching each other in a box-shaped ring."
He would carefully elbow Grimlock's leg. "Pretty neat, huh?"
