Characters: @leah, @mikaelabanes Location: Jasper Autoshop and Repair Content Warnings: N/A Plot Summary: Leah is looking for a job and sees a cute girl. Conversation ensues.
Mikaela was always working. She had to. If she didn't, she and her dad wouldn't be able to pay the rent.
But that also meant that she didn't really get to have much of a social life. In high school, she had a pretty lively one. But now that she was out and not going to college, she had to work full time. It was a bit lonely, but she would live.
Mikaela was just finishing up the car she was working on and sending it on her way when she saw someone new come in. A girl who looked her age, but she didn't remember ever seeing her in high school.
"Hey," she said, an easy grin on her face. "What can I do for you?"
Honestly, despite all its flaws, Mikaela was lucky enough to have a job.
Leah had enjoyed working at her father's mechanic shop. As much trouble as it had been, and as much as her mother pissed her off, working with her dad had been fun. It had taught her a lot. But now that he was gone, Jessamine had determined the shop wasn't worth keeping. There was no money in it, and no one was going to get work from a FEMALE leadmechanic.
With that gone, there was nothing keeping her at home. She had packed up what little she had own, scavenged money from a few accounts, as well as "collected" what other owed her. At the end, it totaled a little more than three thousand dollars. Not a lot, but enough. Enough for now.
With that, she had taken to another town, and then another. She knew she had to stay near the Rockies, lest she lose her giant robot friends, but that was as confined as she was. Now she could go anywhere-- and go anywhere she did. She went up and down the country, until this little town had caught her attention, and immediately it had attracted her attention.
And now, the cute little mechanic at the auto shop was holding it captive.
"Uh-- Yeah, actually. My car's overheatin' a little too often. I was just comin' by to grab some parts." A little smile teased at her lips. "So I'll take that. An' your number, if you don't mind."
No, Mikaela definitely did not recognize the girl. But people stopping through on their way to other places wasn't an uncommon thing. Being near a highway meant that there were occasional newcomers stopping into eat or sleep or get fixed up.
A soft laugh came from the girl now. Parts, she could do. Her number, she wasn't sure. She never gave her number to the men who came asking for it. She always gave out a fake one. But not many girls asked for Mikaela's number. Not many girls actually liked her, honestly.
"Well, if you tell me what parts you need, I'll check to see what we have."
Shoving her hands into her pockets, Leah offered the other girl a half-smile, eyes trailing over her form. She certainly was lovely. Lovely, with just a hint of attitude, which was EXACTLY how Leah preferred them. (Well, she also preferred taller women, but given she was 5' 9", taller women weren't exactly the easiest thing to find nowadays.) Still, she was pretty, and she definitely seemed to know her way around a mechanic shop. It was worth a shot.
"I think mine's got a leak. Normally I could fix it myself, but it looks like I didn't pack the right parts before settin' out on this useless road trip." The older woman tilted her head back, nodding towards the pink Jeep. "I can install it myself, if y'all are in a bind; that ain't no big deal, y'know?"
Honestly, the more Leah looked at her, the less she could understand why so few girls went for other girls. They were soft, touchable, but with a FIRE that burned brightly beneath their skin. It was one of the reasons she preferred them, even if she had been with mostly men recently.
Mikaela was no tall girl. She was a measly 5'2", though she would take on anyone of any height. Small, but fiery. Mikaela offered Leah a smile, shaking her head. It was a slow day and she welcomed the work.
Also, Leah was pretty and Mikaela would like to spend more time with her if that was possible.
But Mikaela also knew the likelihood that the other would be leaving as soon as her car was fixed. Make the best of the time you have now, she supposed.
"Nah," she said, waving her hand. "I can do it. It's no problem. Lemme see what I can do for you, 'kay?"
As much as Leah enjoyed traveling—something that had become almost necessary due to Starscream’s demanding need for the relics—she was willing to remain there for a while. Starscream had told her to lay low, especially now that she had the Apex Armor. And, hey, what better way to remain safe and stay hidden then while hanging out with a pretty woman?
It wasn't like Starscream needed her traveling ALL the time. He just wanted her to keep out of sight, keep her head low... Basically, he wanted her to lead a normal life and not get arrested. And while that last part wasn't going to be easy, what was more normal than trying to start a relationship? That was what most humans wanted, after all.
“Sounds great,” Leah grinned, and gave a wink. As flirty as she could be, the darker-skinned woman wanted to keep it as casual as possible. Maybe dinner, a movie—something nice and casual. She could do casual; hell, all Leah did was casual. It was easier that way. “Lead the way.”
The human flashed her another smile. She was going to get her number of it was the last thing she did. “And then, y’know. Maybe after we do that, we can exchange numbers? ‘M still holdin’ out for that, just so you’re not surprised.”
Mikaela smiled. She never gave out her number to customers-- but most of her customers who asked for her number were older men who hit on her. Not pretty girls who were being respectful.
She tied her hair back behind her, pulling it into a pony-tail as she went to go look at Leah's jeep.
"I'm Mikaela, by the way. Since you'll need a name to put in your contact list when I give you my number."
But after Mikaela finishes the job. Work first, play later.
"Yeah, I can fix this up pretty quickly. Gimme maybe ten minutes and you'll be good to go."
If there was one thing in this world that Leah would bend over backwards for, it was a pretty girl. She knew from experience that being a woman in the mechanical world didn’t do much. It didn’t pay, and it certainly didn’t earn you any respect. You had to earn respect in this world, and you had to fight tooth and nail to keep it. So, yeah, she’d show the pretty thing— MIKAELA, she reminded herself— a little respect. God knew it’d probably been a while.
“Oh, c’mon, we both know a skilled mechanic could do it in no less than eight.” There was a smile on her lips, one that teased and promised. “But I’ll be nice and give you nine. Go prove me wrong, Mikaela.”
The name tasted nice on her tongue, and so Leah’s smile only grew as she flopped into one of the waiting room’s chairs. Her eyes shifted from the pretty older woman to the door, watching for any male customers. If they were respectful, then good. If not, well— She knew better than anyone else what kind of world Mikaela was working in, and she would be damned if she caught anyone harassing her. Even if this didn’t end in a date, at least they could be friends. At least they could protect each other.
Women watched out for other women; that was what the world had taught her.
Mikaela rolled light eyes. "I know I can do that, but I'm just offering some leeway in case I get held up."
There were many who liked to stop Mikaela in the middle of her work, assuming she wasn't busy. That got annoying pretty fast.
The teenager quickly got to work, wanting to be thorough and give Leah her best quality of work. Of course, she always did that. But a part of Mikaela wanted to impress the girl.
Exactly eight minutes later, Mikaela returned. She used a rag to wipe off some dirt off her cheek.
"It's done, your car is all good," she said with an easy grin.
