It was the middle of the night, and Moonwing knew without a doubt that if she were caught, she would get in trouble. Sneaking out after her curfew was never a good thing, and, being the obedient young bot she was, she would never have considered it if it had not been incredibly important. She felt the weight of the risk she was taking upon her shoulders keenly, but she was determined to bear it, for the person she sought to speak with was worth all that risk and more. And it had been worth it - for she got to see Predaking.
She could not exactly describe what the strange fluttering in her spark was whenever she thought of him, for she did not have the words to describe such a thing. Their budding relationship was innocent and pure in the naivety of their youth, marked by shy smiles and awkward words. Any bot who saw how they behaved together would know almost instantly what was going on, of course, but the two of them did not. It made it that much sweeter.
Predaking had said that he had a surprise for her, and had asked her to climb upon his back so that he might carry her there. His request had stunned her - he had permitted no Decepticon (Not even Lord Megatron himself!) to ride him before. It was an incredible honor to be the first, and only, to be trusted with such a thing. So, she had settled herself upon his shoulders and had held on tight, and they had flown.
Moonwing, still so new to flight herself, had never imagined what it would feel like to fly on the back of a predacon. It was a new experience, to say the least, but after the first initial shock at his swift take-off, she had settled. She knew in her spark no harm would befall her, and if she slipped from his back, she knew he would catch her. Predaking had become an unlikely friend, a guardian, a protector.
From Predaking’s back, Moonwing could gawk at the sky without having to worry about possibly losing her balance and falling from the safety of her perch. The stars twinkled above them, little pinpricks of light that winked and watched over their journey, while the pale brightness of the moon lit their way. She admired the stars, picking out patterns she recognised as human constellations, and especially admired the moon. They flew for a very long time, and eventually Moonwing had no idea where they were or how far they’d gone from the ship, but she did not worry: Predaking knew where they were going, and she would be safe with him.
They eventually descended, and Moonwing realized they were flying over… an ocean? She had never really seen an ocean before, and thus was enchanted at the sight. It seemed to go on and on, as far as she could see. The seas below were calm, and the light from the moon was gently refracted by the gentle waves that rocked the surface of the water. Dark shapes, what seemed to be a cluster of islands, came into view next, and she supposed that that was where they were going.
They landed on the edge of a beach, and the young seeker slid from the predacon’s back. Under the light of the moon and the stars, the place that Predaking had brought her to looked downright ethereal. Moonwing, who had not set foot on land since she’d originally crash-landed on Earth, gazed around at wonderment.
“I didn’t know there was so much green in the entire universe,” She breathed, the awe evident in her voice as well as on her face. And there was green, rich and vibrant, and if the hue was dulled it was only due to the night’s shadows. She had never seen plants much less the tropical vegetation that grew upon these little islands, and the long leaves rustled in the breeze. A short ways away, the water gently lapped the shore in a rhythmic staccato.
She had no idea such a magical place had existed, much less on Earth. How many times had the Nemesis circled the globe and passed over places like this?
Moonwing turned back to the dragon with a delighted smile. “This place is beautiful,” And then, perhaps unwittingly fulfilling a prophecy, she took Predaking’s draconic head gently in her hands, just as she had in his dream. “Thank you for bringing me here!”
The place was unique, beautiful, huge, green… Amazing. Something really different of the gray and metallic ship. It's was like a dream. Like an other world. The wind was like a call from the liberty. They was free here. The sky was empty of clouds, revealing its beautiful stars and the Moon. They glow in the dark space, alone, as a million of guardian who protect our world, the space, the time… our self. The first time that Predaking had seen them, it's was like a million of eyes where here, watching him and take a silent gaze on him. They was so high, impossible to catch. They was free, like his was not since his first day in this world.
The dragon wanted to share this with someone one day, and now Moonwing was his best friend. She needs to see how the world is great and beautiful. The beast see everyday the ground of this planet from the sky. He see how this place is beautiful, but he can't stop to watch it properly. It was shame. It was like normal. But since Dreadwing showed this place to the Predacon, he's not the same. He was like a beat without spark and soul, locked in a cage everyday and everynight.
He looked at the sky, as if lost. Megatron and Shockwave was his master but… He wasn't happy. He was alone all the time, except when Moony is with him. Is everything is as it should be? Probably not. Nobody can keep an animal in cage forever… An animal of this size and this power.
After that, his friend took his head in his hands, look at his optics. It was… really strange for him, but amazing. He didn't know why, but he felt strange in the company of this girl. It's probably… friendship? He didn't know. Not yet. But she was happy, and that's all he needs. If she is happy, he's too. However, he was like… shy when she have this look. He was embarrassed. He wanted to blush. But robots can't, you know. He looked away. Predaking can't reply with this form… hopefully for him. He didn't know what to say to that look, but a “you are welcome” would probably be great.
Her attention was held captive by the beautiful view. How long had she spent cooped up on the Nemesis with no inkling as to the beauty of the world around her? How had she missed this utter magnificence? It truly seemed like a whole new world compared to the dull grey and darkness of the warship, which for so long had been the only world she’d ever known. Even though it was nighttime, the light of the moon and stars made everything so much more brighter than the dark hallways she’d grown used to.
Moonwing had no contemporaries of similar age to interact with. All she had were her caretakers and her mentors, and while they were indeed good company… well, there had been something lacking in her life, and that had left her feeling rather isolated and lonely as time had worn on. Perhaps that was part of what had drawn her to Predaking. She would have to be blind not to see how lonely he was, confined to the Flight Deck with no one else to talk to. Though they were two very different people, they had more in common than they perhaps realized.
She knew no words with which to describe properly this thing that existed between herself and Predaking, no definitions or explanations that would reveal to her why her spark fluttered in such a way each time they met. The draconic head held gently in her hands shifted, his gaze looking away, and she too looked away, suddenly feeling embarrassed too. Cybertronians could not blush… but if she could, she would be. As it were, her silver wings twitched upward - an indication of bashfulness to anyone who knew how to read the moods of a seeker from their wings.
Moonwing turned her attention back to the green, and the sea, and the stars and the moon which hung in the sky like silent sentinels. “I had no idea such a place could even exist,” she admitted again, softer this time, “I always thought… Well, that this planet was desolate and ugly.” Never in her wildest dreams could she have imagined that it could be this way.
Under her foot the sand shifted. It was a completely alien sensation, and she gazed down in surprise. “... I wish…” And then she stopped, suddenly shy and unsure of herself. Never before had she given voice to the radical thoughts which had entered her mind. “... I wish we could stay here forever. I wish we could just… not go back.” She’d never thought about running away before, but… with the endless sea stretching out before her, and the skies wide and clear above her, Moonwing felt temptation.
No day and no night passed without Predaking dreams of this wildlife, and this since his own birth. Be a beast was his first nature, but the other? They are “normal”, but are they happy to not be… free? Moony seemed to be more or less happy, the vehicons can't show their feelings… After all, who was happy on the Nemesis? Megatron? No. Even him, because the Autobot was here, on Earth. When they will all be dead, the leader will be happy? Proud of him? Probably… but not the other. Not forever. Always in cage, they will never free. They are Decepticon. They are an army. They are soldiers. They are weapon… But are they alive for the powerful leader? They are just like thousand of objects. They are nothing.
Be here for the second time makes the dragon pleased. No one was here to say to him what to do, go to hunt, to be a beast… He was himself, hybrid between a normal person, and an ancient beast. Moonwing was on his side, but for how long? Forever? Probably… not. The war was here, and everyone will make everything to try to have the animal on his side, even if they needs to hurt his lady. The young girl was in danger with him. He knew it. That's why the was here, on this island, tonight.
She admired the place. It made him happy. Only, he hadn't taken her here just for it. They had to talk, and seriously. However, she forestalled him on the subject. She wanted to stay here forever, like him. They was so far from all the rest… But they can't stay here forever. They needs to eat, have something above their head to sleep… They are just children in a cruel and terrible world.
He looked a few seconds into his dragon mode, not knowing how to begin. He finally turned in bot mode and put a knee on the ground to be at her height. He gently took her hand and placed his other hand over hers. He looked into her eyes.
- Moonwing… we needs to speak about something.
It wasn't a marriage proposal, no! He sighed, looking down a few seconds, then looked away.
- I know… that you are like me. You want to go away from all of this, stop to be in this war but… We can not. We need to stay with the Decepticon as we have always been… For now. But… if one day we can get out there, I promise you that we will.
He looked again at her, and let go her hand. He didn't know why he took her hands. It was like a reflex. He sat on the sand, facing the sea, next to her friend.
- But, for tonight, why don't just enjoy of this beautiful view? This is Dreadwing who introduced me to this place. But I still have not understood why.
She hadn’t dared allowed herself to ponder on thoughts of actually leaving before now, but standing here in this beautiful place, with Predaking at her side… Well, a flood gate had been opened, and she now found herself wondering. It was in Moonwing’s nature to question things, and to seek out answers for why things were the way they were.
She had been taught that the Decepticons had fought for freedom and, and yet denied freedom to the lowest crew members and treated them like disposable drones instead of people. She had been taught that the Decepticon way was fair, and yet no one seemed to have much choice in whether they could come and go as they pleased. She had been taught that the Decepticon Cause stood against tyranny and oppression, and yet that was the very thing they seemed to perpetuate! Her questions about such things had been met with stern words, and she’d quickly figured out that it was wiser not to ask. It didn’t seem fair at all, but what other option was there?
Was that why Predaking had brought her here? So they could get away from the Nemesis and away from prying eyes, and talk without fear of punishment?
“What… what is it?” Moonwing blinked in confusion as he went down upon one knee and took her hand in his own. His hand was so large compared to her own, and even with her being an almost fully-grown heavy seeker (and taller than many grounders!) she still felt dwarfed by him. His mannerisms were always gentle with her, though, and she was not afraid.
His words were not incorrect, and the young seeker took a moment to marvel at the truth he spoke. How was it that he had somehow known her deepest, secret thoughts, the ones she’d told no other before? He was right -- Moonwing did indeed secretly want to get away. What young bot wouldn’t, when born into a war that had begun long before they had ever been a twinkle in the eyes of their creators? What bot wouldn't, when being given a gun and told to shoot other bots who were not like herself? She didn’t want to hurt anyone! The very thought of taking a life was abhorrent and terrifying to her.
“I-” Moonwing hesitated, at a loss for words. There was a pause before she spoke again, and this time she willingly shared her secrets. “... I don’t want to be a warrior,” she admitted in a tiny voice, “I d-don’t want to be what they are trying to make me become. I don’t want to k-kill, or hurt people. But what choice do we have? Where could we go, where Megatron would not find us?”
In the world they lived in, there were only two options to them: loyalty to the Decepticon Cause (and thus a life of fighting and of war), or treason. The idea that there was a third option, to not be a Decepticon or an Autobot, was nearly inconceivable in Moonwing’s world, for she had always been taught that one either was loyal to Megatron and the Decepticon Cause, or one was a traitor and a coward and an Autobot. And yet… Could there be another way? A way where one could choose not to take a side?
It was a cruel world, where leaders indoctrinated children and robbed them of their innocence by forcing them into a war not of their making. “It isn’t fair,” she mumbled, her wings drooping. “None of this is fair…!” Seeking the comfort and safety that his very presence brought, Moonwing settled down next to him, and instinctively huddled into his side. Her EM field was drawn close to her frame, as if she were afraid that if she projected outward, Megatron would somehow find them.
Admiring the view did sound nice. It would take a while for her shoulders to become less tense, and her EM field to loosen up, but… it was hard not to relax when Predaking was next to her, and had brought her to this magical, otherworldly place. “Dreadwing brought you here?” Moonwing asked then. Such a thing surprised her, for she would never would have expected the older seeker to ever do something so strange and out of character. “... Maybe he likes it here. Maybe he wants to stay here, too.”
The place was beautiful, but… there was a lot of sadness here too. The Moon embrace the stars, but Predaking wanted to do the same thing with Moonwing tonight. It was the first time in the life that he wanted to do it. Why? Why he wanted to? Because… He was sad for himself, but not only. For Moony too. They was two lost children in a war. For the first time in their lives, they admit that they were feared. He sigh under the stars and listened to his friend. She was so afraid by all of this. But there was nowhere to go. They could not leave. Not now.
- Calm down Moonwing.
He pats her shoulder with his huge hand. She needed to relax and also him. They had to try not to think about it. Yes, the world is cruel, but it's real life. Without it, they would probably not know each other and he would probably not here. He was create by Shockwave for this war. He was just a weapon… but more important than his friend. She was just a soldier… not important. Life was better for him than for her on some point.
Lock at the sea again, he made a sort of nervous laugh. He, the old seeker brought him here to watch the view it seems, not something else. They talked a bit and left. Dreadwing had made him understand why the dragon was here. To be a weapon. Nothing else. It was a terrible fate for the best, but he's born with. Now he can just wait and see... like many other.
- Maybe yes. He said that many other on the ship did not really see what is “Earth”. I suppose that is why he brought me here… To make understand that it is a beautiful place and it is a shame to spoil it. Probably.
It was not simple to understand Dreadwing. He was pretty neutral… To not say all the time. But this bot don't see him like a beast, as Moonwing. They was the only two to think this in fact. He looks at his hands. He wanted to ask Moonwing about somethink else.
- Moon'…
He started. It was the first time that he called her like this. It was always “Moonwing” but not this time. Predaking seems to trust his friend now. He seemed close to her now like two best friend. She was very important for him.
- Do you think… That I am a monster or a beast? … Like the others?
He seems sad. He was happy to be strong and unique ... But he was sad to be so different and all the others are frightened by him.
- I… I want to leave the Nemesis too… I do not want to hunt the Autobots anymore… I do not know them but Megatron wants that I hurt them… But I do not know why. I am a monster for them, like almost anyone in the ship and… I… I feel just bad about it.
He looked at her. It was a first time again. It was the first time he entrusts himself to someone. It was the first time he did not feel strong.
- You are so lucky to be like the others, you know.
Moonwing turned her attention from the reflection of the moon across the water to him as soon as the timbre of his voice changed. She had not seen Predaking looking so vulnerable before, and for a moment she was taken aback. He had always been so strong, practically invincible, that she had never really thought there was anything that he feared or was bothered by. Clearly she was wrong, and she made a soft sound of dismay at the sadness she saw now upon his face. Sadness, likely, that no one else had ever seen before. It was an indication of trust - he trusted her enough to show her this vulnerability, just as she trusted him. Who else could they trust but each other, when their entire world sought to control them and mold them into beings not of their choosing?
She rose up on her knees so that their faces were (more or less) level, and took his hand. Her small fingers entwined with his, and then she squeezed.
“You are not a monster,” Moonwing said firmly. If there was one thing she knew for certain in this whole universe, it was that Predaking was not the beast that Megatron and Shockwave had tried to shape him into. “Would a monster have saved my life when I fell off the flight deck? Would a monster have brought me to this beautiful place?”
She looked him straight in the eyes then. “They need to see you for who you truly are, and not what they want to see. You are a good person, but they’re trying to make you into something you don’t want to be. You mustn’t let them!” Of course, this was easier said than done, for it seemed the entire world only saw the dragon’s claws and teeth and failed to see the mech. Megatron saw Predaking as a weapon to be pointed in the direction of the Autobots and released to rain destruction. It made her angry to know that they did not see what she saw. It wasn’t fair to him that they judged him without even knowing him!
The young seeker hesitated for a moment, before shyly placing a slender hand on his broad cheek. “I don’t think you are a monster,” Moonwing repeated fervently, “I don’t think you ever were a monster. They look at you and wish you were, but you’ve proven them wrong already.” There was a special irony in her words, given how deeply indoctrinated she was herself, and yet was quite willing to flout the rules when it came to her dearest friend. Oh, she didn’t care now if this was treasonous talk, for she hated seeing Predaking so sad like this! It had never occurred to her that someone so strong might feel so weak, and she found herself feeling useless and helpless in not knowing what to do. She wished she could make it all go away, so that he could be happy, and not feel like an outsider.
“Someday… Someday we’ll fly away. We’ll fly so far away that none of them will ever find us!” For once, the indoctrination hold upon her had been loosened, and she found it much easier to say these things that she would never would have dared otherwise. Where they would go and how they would survive on their own without energon or shelter, she didn’t know… but they could not go yet.
His face was surprised. He looked down at the hand of his friend. What she did was nice. He felt close to her. Despite she was smaller and weaker, he felt stronger with her. He felt capable of moving mountains. His spark felt something soothing. How lucky he had to have her! His friend was fabulous, gentle, loyal, and… amazing. Her hand touch his face, and he felt somewhat embarrassed. His optics were deep into her. He listened. What she said was so reassuring. He was happy to bring Moonwing her to speak of their life. They was like only one soul. Together they was stronger than everything.
- Moonwing… I…
He grits his teeth, and suddenly looked at the floor. He did not know if he was terribly embarrassed or if he just did not know what to say. She was so nice. He stayed like this few seconds. What would he do? Finally, he grabbed her in his arms, suddenly, and pressed her against him. It was a hug! He was very grateful that she gives him the moral!
- Thank you. … You… You are amazing.
He did not know how to be nice. He had never before had to be! But he did it very well. He did not pressed too hard. It was a very sweet and friendly hug. He released her after a minute, he held react may be too long. He coughed a little, seem sorry.
- Sorry... A hug is probably inappropriate.
Or totally not! He rubs the back of his head, looking at her with his air of beaten dog. He then took her hand instinctively. He rubbed the top with his hand, being careful to not rub it with his claw. It was fun to see that Predaking was instinctively very sweet and seemed to enjoy cuddling others. Adorable. He cocked his head.
- It's late. We should go, Moony.
Aaaaw he said “Moony”! This boy is amazing! MARRY HIM!
Never before had she spoken with such conviction! Her words were the truth as far as she was concerned, and she believed them with all her spark. Ever since befriending Predaking and learning that not everyone saw him as she saw him, Moonwing had been frustrated on behalf of her friend. They treated him like a simple-minded killing machine, never taking into consideration that he had thoughts and feelings and likes and dislikes just like any other bot. It made Moonwing happy to see Predaking’s malaise disappear, and happier still to know that she had helped lift his spirits. He made her feel bigger, and braver, and stronger, capable of anything. She did not feel so afraid when she was with him; she felt as if they could face the world together as one.
When he seemed to hesitate, however, she felt dismayed. She had not meant to cause him to feel embarrassed by her actions! She cautiously drew her hand back, worried that she had caused him discomfort. Her worries were in vain, it seemed, for he scooped her up into his arms and held her close. Moonwing momentarily was startled, but quickly relaxed into the embrace with a happy sigh. Never before had she felt so safe. “It’s only the truth,” she said, wrapping her own arms around him and pressing her face close to his chest, “And telling the truth doesn’t make me anything special.” There was a particular sense of irony in this considering they belonged to a faction named 'Decepticon', but her naivety had not yet been shattered by the ways of the world.
Eventually, his arms fell away, and he looked sheepish at his behaviour. It was her turn to be embarassed. “I didn’t… I didn’t mind at all,” she shyly said then, for it was the truth: she had not minded in the slightest - in fact, she’d quite liked being hugged. But in the way of innocent youthful love, she had little clue as to how to process the budding affection she felt for Predaking, and she too fidgeted under such gentle attentions. With a tiny smile and what only could be a blush, she admitted, “... I liked it.”
Predaking was right. All things come to an end, and Moonwing knew that they could not stay here in this beautiful place forever. It seemed so unfair that now they had tasted freedom that they now had to return to The Nemesis, but someone would surely notice their absence, and then they would both be in trouble.
“Will we ever come back to this place? Everything is so beautiful here,” She sighed, looking around to take one last wistful look at the beautiful sights around them - the moon reflected across the waves, the trees gently swaying in the breeze, and the water gently lapping the shore.
