Okay so we've seen that you can take various alt-modes. Vehicles, Animals, Cities, heck even Weaponry.
My belief, is that certain types of transformers can only do some of it. EXAMPLE! Predacons and Insecticons for example are, both Animals, but vastly different.
This is gonna get complicated as this is uncharted, headcanonical territory which borders upon AU.
Insecticons have been shown to have hives for specific types, at least in TF:P. The insecticons are all Rhinoceros Beetles. HOWEVER! I believe this is only a specific hive, and these Insecticons are just a breed. I think that there are other types. Locust, Grasshopper, Scarab Beetle, Ant and even a Mosquito breed of Insecticons, each with a specific role:
Rhinoceros Beetle: Battle Bruisers, the most plentiful and some of the strongest
Locust: Scouts, the swiftest of the Insecticons and the most resourceful
Grasshopper: Assassins/Leaders, mentally strong individuals and typically agile
Praying Mantis: Hunters with a keen sense of tracking
Grasshopper: Scientists, they aren't as strong as the others and are more adept for academic studies
Scarab Beetle: Battle Bruisers, they are stronger than Rhinoceros Beetle Insecticons but much rarer, the ratio is 1 Scarab to 10 Rhinoceros
Ant: Diggers, cultivators of the hives
Mosquito: Scouts
Bees/Hornets: Leaders and Juggernaughts, they are the generally most powerful and capable of taking down many Scarab Beetles.
This is just the surviving insecticon breeds. I think that in a true hive, there is populations of all those types, with their own mini hive, so a mini Rhinoceros Hive, mini Ant hive etc.
Predacons are mythical based, Dragons, Griffins and hybrids. Predacon can literally refer to any predatorial beast mode. I think they have a pack-mentality, while the Insecticons have a hive-mentality. With the packs, leadership can change easily, but with a hive, it's much harder.
Predacons I think are unique, individually, and less cookie-cutter than Insecticons.
I believe figures like Airachnid or Blackarachnia or Tarantulas belong to a group called Arachnicons, while Scorponok and the like are Scorpionides, Crustaceobots for Crustaceans and so forth.
I think that an Arachnicon cannot become a Scorpionide alt form, or any non spider form, just as a triple changer probably couldn't have both vehicle and animal. Transmetal Two is a unique case..
