Characters: Open Location: Inside an Abandoned Energon Mine Content Warnings: None Plot Summary: Diana decides to finally start exploring that mysterious cave. Little does she know that the cave is an abandoned energon mine. Even worse, she's not alone.
Noteworthy. I need something interesting. Something fascinating, Didi thought to herself as she clutched her flashlight as she stood at the mouth of a large cave. It almost felt as if the cave was a giant beast that was prepared to swallow her whole. Didi took a deep breath as she turned on her flashlight and made her way into the cave. There was nothing to be nervous about. The town wasn't to far away, especially with her bicycle parked on a rock at the mouth of said cave. She shined the light on the cave walls and stopped every know and again to take note of the minerals. As she continued on through the cave she realized that it began to go downward.
She contemplated whether or not it was wise to keep going. Looking at her watch she saw that it was only five in the afternoon. Surely her father was drowning in his work and wouldn't miss her presence for what could be hours. And her grandparents were out of town so it wouldn't hurt to venture further down for a few more minutes.
As she continued to travel downward, each step careful and steady, she finally noticed these very large blue crystals. They were odd, and unlike anything she had ever encountered. Finally something noteworthy! Didi screamed in her mind as she grabbed her notebook out of her bag and began to scribble down all the details. She stopped midway and pulled out her phone to take a picture. These crystals were so beautiful. A sample! I need a sample!
Getting up from her stop leaving her bag and books on the floor and grabbed a rock from the cave floor. Clutching the rock in her hand she banged it against the crystal in hopes of chipping off a decent piece.
The need for energon had driven the Autobots to send Sunstreaker to investigate the cave. It was probably just a cave, really, but one of the fliers had gotten faint readings on a flyby. The natural recourse? Send a frontliner. Of course. The big guy made for dishing punishment out on cons, lets send him into the cave. On the nasty organic planet.
Sunstreaker grumbled in displeasure as the whirling vortex of the ground bridge opened near the entrance of the cave. He stepped through and into the dank, dark dirty place that he was meant to scout. It was a good thing he held off on polishing.
He paused for just a moment, pulling his gun from subspace, as insurance before starting forward. His pedes made a heavy, muted thud with each step he took, the sound accented with a metallic ting when he struck harder ground. It began to get a little tight and he had to stop, noting the downward direction the path headed and the way that he would definitely hit his head.
Well, he vented, there was nothing for it.
He transformed in a whirring of gears and hissing of hydraulics, his engine purring as he headed down the slope and deeper into the cave. As he progressed, he began to pick up positive energon readings. Huh. Looks like this wasn't for nothing after all.
"Come on! Come on! YES!" Didi exclaimed as a small fragment of the large blue crystal fell to the ground. Without second thought she tossed the rock aside and bent down to pick up the shining stone. It was a small piece that about as long and thin as her index finger. "Whoa."
Didi got up to go back to her journal and scribble in some last minute notes before she heard the sound of gears from the other side of the cave. She stopped dead in her tracks as her blood ran cold as ice. Perhaps this wasn't just a cave. Perhaps this was owned by someone? Or maybe workers were coming to drill the cave for some more of these odd crystals? Not wanting to find Didi rushed into action grabbing her notebook and stuffing it in her backpack along with the crystal. She bent down picking the flashlight from the ground and swinging her back pack over her shoulders.
What now? Whoever that is is blocking my only exit! Didi screamed in her mind as she quickly scanned the cave for a way out but to no avail. In a fleeting moment of panic Didi ran over to a large rock run behind. She turned of her flashlight and crouched down. At least now she wouldn't be seen. Now all she had to do was wait until whoever that was finally left.
Sunstreaker rolled slowly forward, down the path. He winced every time a drip of water landed on his shiny plating. Dammit, he jus knew that was leave streaks. Ugh. He was still glad he had transformed, though. He'd rather not be buffing his plates as well after having his paint scuffed and scratched by the walls around him.
He came to where the cave let out a bit, the energon readings growing stronger. His headlights lit the blue matter caught in the walls of the cave and he couldn't help a wave of smugness. Bingo. He didn't know how much there was, but even a little energon, once processed, would be of help.
He used his sensors to check how large this room was, the readings coming back and telling him that it was big enough to stand and move comfortably, unlike the small tunnel earlier. Good. With the shifting of metal and gears, Sunstreaker returned to his root mode, one pede slamming hard into the ground with a boom as he came out of the transformation. His headlights flickered off, as his optic sensors would do well enough, even by the faint light of the energon.
With a few short steps, he moved to one wall and crouched to observe the blue matter. Definitely energon...if they were fortunate, there would be a goodly amount here.
Once gain Didi heard the whirring sound of gears turning. Crouched behind the rock contemplating whether or not she should take a peak. On the negative side, she could give her position away. On the positive side, she would know what or with whom she was actually dealing with. It wouldn't hurt to take a look. Would it?
Slowly but surely she took a peak around the large stone. But at the sight of a large golden colored robot that was examining the very crystals she was looking at just moment before she gasped. Quickly she covered her mouth and hid behind the stone so quickly she smacked her back against it with a thud. Ignoring the dull pain she felt from her back she immediately reached for her bag to grab her notebook. No. No for something as incredible as this she needed a picture! Taking a deep breath she gathered up her courage. Gripping on her phone she opened the camera. If she was careful enough she wouldn't alert the robot.
Once again she peaked around the rock with her phone in hand ready to take a picture. Her hands shook slightly as she gazed at the robot. This picture would quite literally be a picture of a miracle of science. Her mind went wild with questioned but she forced herself to keep the thoughts and questions at bay and finally took the picture.
CLICK!
Didi's blood ran cold. The flash had went off. She stood there in shock and fear. Surely the robot noticed her now. And all Didi could do was stand there like a deer in headlights.
Sunstreaker tapped one of the crystals, giving a satisfied grunt as it tinged under his digit. He then raised one hand to one of his audial fins, activating his comm.
"Sunstreaker here. I have confirmation."
Usually, he wasn't so formal. But, with Soundwave undoubtedly monitoring frequencies, he wasn't about to give too much away. The last thing he wanted was a bunch of 'Cons jumping him. He was good, but, he wasn't that good. Besides, he still had to find Sideswipe's stupid aft.
He rose from his crouch, waiting for a response, optics sweeping the room.
Click.
Sunstreaker froze. The hell was that? His head swung around and he saw it. The tiny organic creature standing there with some sort of device, eyes huge. Two thoughts crossed his processor:
Are you fragging serious?
And,
Sideswipe's not even here right now...
Normally, this kind of bad luck only happened when his brother was around to cause it. He'd been told how many times to keep out of sight? Only to be nailed by a human almost as soon as he left the base. Information streamed across his HUD. It was female, and it had a cellular device with a camera, which had produced the flash.
He vented hard, taking a few steps forward. Oh, Primus, he hoped it didn't touch him. He extended his servo, palm up, scowling.
"Hand over the phone, squishy," he growled in English.
That language download had been a good move, it seemed.
The robot turned to her, and he did not look pleased at all. Didi's heart raced as the robot's eyes landed on her. Would it squish her? Would it rip her limb from limb? She thought about running for a moment. But surely it would catch her. Unless I run into a small crawl space, then I'd be safe. But for how long? Her eyes scanned the cave for any small cracks, or crawl spaces. Anything she could use to get away.
But then it spoke to her. In English. It asked, no demanded, for her camera. It had even put up it's large metallic hand out ready to receive her camera. All fear that Didi had previously felt left her until only her fierce determination to keep the picture was left. There was no way that she was just going to give this picture away. She wanted, no, needed to know what this thing was and where it came from. She gave the robot a glare and held the camera protectively against her chest.
"NO WAY!" Didi yelled at the robot still clutching her camera protectively. "You are a literal miracle of science! There is no way I'm just gonna let this go!"
He'd been relying on her obvious fear- at least, he thought it was fear. Wide eyes and stiffening were usually signs of that, right? He wouldn't actually know from experience.- as the main factor in procuring the phone.
And then she yelled at him.
Are you fragging serious? he thought for the second time.
He just had to stumble on an annoyingly brave human. His faceplates twisted in a sneer that had sent Decepticons fleeing in the past, his blue optics brightening in anger.
"Science?" he snarled, "You think that measly little bit of tinkering your kind calls 'science' could create anythinglike me?"
Insulting. To Cybertronians in general, and definitely to him. He was far too beautiful to have human science applied.
As he spoke, he snatched at her, fully intending to grab her up despite his aversion to touching organics. Even if he got the phone, she'd seen him. And, so far, at least, they'd been taking humans who'd spotted them back to base. He disagreed with the wisdom of that, but, it seemed to be protocol.
Didi watched in horror as the robot's expression turned into one of anger. It perfectly mirrored the expression her father would give her when she tried to take a peak at his work. The irritation in the robot's eyes was imminent. But she would be damned if she were to let this thing take her only scrap of evidence.
In a fleeting moment of bravado Didi stuffed her phone in her bag and crossed her arms in a show of defiance. As if this bucket of bolts could ever scare me into submission! Didi screamed in her mind. The defiance, however, was incredibly short lived. Suddenly the bot had begun to reach for her. It was trying to grab her. Didi let out a long loud screech as she immediately bolted in the opposite direction, going further down the cave.
Her heart felt as though it was ready to leap out of her chest, and her eyes were wide as saucers scanning the cave wall for any hiding spot. Since the robot was so much larger out running it was out of the question. Therefore, once again due to it's massive size, fighting was out of the question as well.
As she ran Didi saw a small crack in the cave wall, just barely big enough for her to squeeze through. With all her other options exhausted she quickly made her way over to the crack and eased herself through as fast as possible cutting her knee in the process. She grit her teeth and forced herself to keep quiet.
Sunstreaker couldn't help but wince when the thing screeched at him. Primus, that grated on his audials! And then it was running. Dammit! He didn't want to deal with this today.
Letting it go wasn't an option. Either it came with him or...frag, nevermind, he couldn't kill it. That would be directly disobeying orders, and even he wasn't stupid enough to go against the Prime like that. He growled, stomping after the creature angrily. Lifting one hand, he again touched his comm., relating a message. ::Sunstreaker again. One of those little Earth things was hiding in the cave and got a picture of me. It refused to cough up the camera and took off. I'm in pursuit. I'll try not to squish it.::
His tone was waspish, betraying just how this little road bump had ignited his infamous temper.
Up ahead, he saw a flash of movement and activated his headlights at his hips, catching the creature just as it dove into a crack in the wall. Frag it all! He snarled.
"Get your aft back here, and I promise to play nice."
The ugly anger in his voice was likely not an incentive. He stopped in front of the crack, debating on transforming to avoid the claustrophobic sensation caused by the low cave ceiling. Then, decided against it. He wanted full maneuverability, just in case the squishy made a break for it.
He chose to sit down instead, facing the crevice with a hard expression, the ground shuddering as he maneuvered his weight. Ugh. He was gonna have to polish his aft and legs, but, it was better than just standing around.
"You wanna play the waiting game? Fine. Just know that I'll win," he rumbled ominously.
Patience was not his strongsuit, but, he was pissed enough to wait just to spite the fleshling.
Crap. Now it's sitting out there. Waiting for me, Didi thought to herself as she shifted into a more comfortable position. With all the jagged stones in this little crack there was barely any position even remotely comfortable. A few of the sharp edges were on the verge of poking holes in her clothes. And her knee was still bleeding. But she would have to wait until whatever this thing was left her alone.
Time seemed to drag on in a dreadfully slow fashion. And the silence between the two was absolutely deafening. To make matters even worse the cut on her knee had begun to bleed a bit, and she could feel the drops beginning to form and run down her leg. She knew she couldn't keep this up. Perhaps she could reason with it instead. It did seem rather intelligent. Perhaps it wasn't here to kill her? But was she really ready to take such a risk?
The small girl looked at her watch and her heart nearly jumped form her chest. It was 6:15 in the evening. It's been more than a hour since she had been down here. She prayed that her father was still to busy with work to notice her, the last thing she needed was to be reported missing.
"Are you going to kill me?" Didi asked. She hoped she spoke loud enough for the robot to hear, though she assumed he couldn't be that far away from where she was hiding. She was honestly terrified as to what the robot answer would be. What if it said yes? What would she do then?
The whirling sounds of an advanced helicopter tore through the treetops just above. The darkened military green vehicle zoomed towards a particular mine and was proceeding to circle about the entrance when it got the call of a squishy and a camera. So the response was given in a human centric way to avoid as much detection as possible.
"Roger that Sunstreaker-1, your support for the mission will assist in confiscation of illegal materials. Please wait. Over."
It felt oddly homely that she spoke in such a way. Like in the old wars that she helped her comrades on the battlefield. Yet over the years that way was lost as chatter changed.
She touched down at the mouth of the cave before waiting a bit. Surely any pilots would get out and venture in... Then she transforms swiftly before approaching the mouth of the cave. There she stopped an gazed deep into it. It's endless abyss uncomforting to a flier, but even more so to her. Yet she took a breath from her specialized respirator before taking the plunge!
Before she knew it, her shoulder mounted light turned on to help pave the way to the crystals and finally a shiny mech sitting about infront of a crevice, "What is the sitrep, sir?"
Sunstreaker was right. Being as long-lived as Cybertronians were, their perceptions of time were different than those of humans. The relative terms of 'short' and 'long' did not apply equally. That, he was sure of. This little creature would be waited out soon enough. Besides, one of his factionmates had commed back, talking in some kind of military code. More detection avoidance? Probably.
He occupied himself by taking a cloth and polish from his subspace and buffing out the nearly imperceptible blemishes on his plating. If he was going to wait, he was going to do something constructive. He would not be emerging from this cave looking any worse than when he'd come in. His finish would be flawless.
He was correct, a short time later, in his eyes at least, it spoke from the crevice. His optics flickered to the crack to regard it shrewdly.
"No," he groused, "I don't kill squishies because my commander said not to under any circumstances," he muttered a bit to himself before continuing, "I'm not letting you go with your little camera, either. So you can come out and come with me, or we can continue this very enthralling silence in this nasty cave."
His tone was biting, and some of his words obviously sarcastic. Then, he vented.
"I can promise no harm will come to you," he said grudgingly.
Primus, he felt stupid right now.
A light shown on him and he squinted as it bounced off his golden plating. His optics adjusted quickly and he looked up to see a green femme approaching. The same one who'd commed a reply, judging by vocal inflections. Oh, Primus, more formality. He missed Sides, who would just do whatever in response to Sunstreaker doing whatever. None of this questioning and 'sir's. Nobody called him 'sir'.
Thank goodness. So killing her definitely wasn't its intent. Then perhaps it was okay for her to come out of hiding?
Slowly building up her confidence she poked her head out of her hiding spot and saw that there was not one but /two/ giant robots now! It took all her self-control not to bring her head back inside. She examined the second robot. It was green, and much more feminine looking. It didn't seem to be hostile either. Didi took one measly step outside, her eyes glued on the robots for any sign of aggression. These robots were incredibly advanced, far to advanced to be have been made made by human hands. Her brain once again began to spawn questions rapidly. The science to make these things a reality simply doesn't exist yet. So that begs the question.
"What are you?" She asked looking the golden robot in the eyes as she finally stepped out fully. Or at least what would count as his eyes. She watched his face for any emotion, it was obvious that whatever these things were sentient. She did manage make the golden one irritated. But robots couldn't feel, could they? No that was impossible. But it never hurt to ask. "Are you. . . Sentient?
As she waited for her answer she reached into her bag pulled out a small packet of tissues, and tried her best to clean the cut on her knee. The bleeding had ceased, but it wasn't a good idea to leave it dirty. Her mind continued to spawn more questions but she forced herself to be patient.
Baby steps Diana. Baby steps.
