It was the dead of night, and Shane had come back to find the abandoned building he'd spent the last couple of weeks in condemned. Really? Sure it was a crappy place to live, but it had been a source of shelter and now he had nothing. Putting his hands into his pockets, and putting the hood of his jacket over his head, he tried to think of what exactly he could do now. Homeless shelter? No, they'd ask too many questions even if they did feed him. Alley? No, at this time of night he had a bad feeling that he'd end up jumped.
Quietly pondering his next moves, he blew a strand of his brown hair to the side and continued down the sidewalk. Something would come up eventually, he convinced himself. Even if it was under some bridge, he always found a way. But for now he'd just have to think about it. And keep his head down as much as possible.
After all, the last thing he wanted was to be spotted out this late.
A crescendo of squealing tires and roaring engines blasted through the otherwise quiet night. In a dizzying flash of light, a cluster of highly modified cars could be seen burning their way up an adjacent street, with a distinct red bolt leading them. The sheer volume of noise was almost deafening at this hour; it probably would have been equally as loud even during daylight. Just as the stream of racers passed by, the lead car abruptly broke off from the rest of the pack. The red GT40 turned into a controlled spin as it veered down into the much more empty street, away from the race. Seemingly against the laws of physics, the vehicle's momentum ceased as it struck the edge of the curb closest to Shane, making it appear as though it'd been parked there for hours.
Override waited patiently as the group of racers passed by, each trying to wrest away the now-vacant lead position. Just as they vanished from her sight, she saw a collection of brightly flashing police cars chasing after her former flock; exactly as planned. The Velocitronian would have been perfectly fine to drive away in the opposite direction, had there not been a single human present on the side of the otherwise barren street. She'd more than prepared for her eventual first encounter with humans. A set of language learning tapes provided by the Autobot's human allies, as well as a recently constructed holographic 'driver' were enough to fool most passing gazes; she'd never been in such close proximity to another human though, even accidentally.
The cars went by in a whiz that nearly startled the life out of Shane.
Of course street racers were nothing new. The spots he hung out he’d hear them at all times of the night, along with the occasional gunshot, and police sirens. But that wasn’t what concerned him, no, those were the cop cars. It was for that reason he immediately dove toward the strange car, hiding behind it as quickly as he could. Even if they were driving fast there was no way he was getting caught no way in hell. He only stopped to catch his breath when the sirens had long passed him and he could only breathe a sigh of relief.
“Dang it, not getting anywhere soon with cops around,” he muttered in frustration before straightening himself to stand and turning around. “Whoa! Nice car! Don’t tell me someone actually left you in this part of town. Are they insane?”
He carefully reached forward to run a hand along the hood, glancing it over. “Mom woulda loved you. She always liked the faster cars. Woulda loved the custom paint job too.” Man was he losing it, up and talking to a car but he didn’t care.
A brief jolt of surprise ran through Override as the human actually approached her, not to mention brushing a hand over her hood. Primus they were squishy. Now would be a good chance as any to properly introduce 'herself', though; mostly to see if her disguise was capable of holding a conversation.
The tinted driver side window slowly rolled down a few moments later to reveal the 'driver'. She was older than Shane, at least visibly, wearing a black leather jacket and finger-less gloves. Her shoulder-length black hair cascaded down her shoulders as the hologram leaned out the window from behind the wheel.
"Thanks for the compliment!" she answered, sending her voice through the mirage.
Immediately retracting his hand from the car, Shane felt his nerves build up. It wasn’t that he didn’t like being seen - no one could avoid that forever. But of course being seen in the day and night were two different things. And nighttime usually lead to questions. And to say as a street kid Shane hated Jose, well, would be an understatement. And so putting up the toughest look he could muster, he tried his best to at least look not awkward. This was the one time putting up his steely wall would only look more suspcisoius and he was smart enough to know that.
“Oh yeah no problem. GT40 right? It’s a beauty. But I wouldn’t hang around here too long, I’ve seen a lot of cars stolen in these parts,” Shane blurted almost immediately after. “Not that I’m trying to steal it or anything... I uh I just like cars. Get it from my mom kinda, she used to love this kind of stuff.”
God he needed to quit rambling, he tried to chastise himself. But knew he couldn’t being caught off guard like this. And then a thought occurred to him. “Unless you were with those street racers. I guess I wouldn’t really need to warn you then.”
"I'd like to see somebody try to steal her," the hologram replied with a smirk. The human didn't seem that old for his species, but then again what basis did Override have to judge humans on? She had to be careful though, lest her disguise unravel itself.
"I'm Lori... who're you?" she asked. Override had gone through thousands of potential names for her hologram, but Lori in particular just seemed to strike a chord in her.
Well then this woman was tough, he guessed. Shane put his hands on his hips, an amused smirk on his own face now that he got the feeling she wouldn’t turn him in. Or at the very least she didn’t seem to. She seemed to be his type of person, he could easily see that - especially if she was doing a street race. “Well, if you think you can take him.”
When she asked for his name again, he tended back up. It was a reflex given he didn’t even know if he was still a well known missing person. He remembered the days he was on amber alerts in multiple states. So it always made him nervous to ever say his name for fear someone would recognize him. Because God knew he was never going back to the only lack of a better word “relative” he had. All the same, he knew he couldn’t not give an answer and as long as no one heard him he wouldn’t trip about one person hearing him. “Shane...” he replied, though it came out far more like a fumble of words - hopefully not too bad though.
Lori smiled back to him, simply taking Shane to be a bit nervous. He was awfully nervous, come to think of it; she hadn't even transformed for him yet. Override's first though was to move on to something in both their wheelhouses. "So Shane, you fancy yourself a mechanic, huh?"
Shane’s eyes admittedly perked up a little at the mention of mechanics. His green eyes traced down to the ground. It was both a good and bad subject to talk about. He loved mechanics, cars, bikes, the works but.. “I uh. I mean well I know a little. My mom used to work as one back when I was a little kid,” he explained to the woman. “She was one of the best that Jasper, Nevada ever had... Everyone liked her y’know? She used to teach me when she couldn’t afford a sitter. So I know a little but not much. But the one thing I do know is cars... Models, makes, and all that stuff.”
Override never exactly had a mother, at least not by Earth standards; she suddenly popped into existence, and then made a b-line for the nearest race track. But, she didn't need to be born like a human to understand the connection between Shane and his mother, from what little he had mentioned at least. "Don't sell yourself short, that's not a bad skill to have at all!" she chimed in, tilting her head slightly. Lori turned her head off to the side for a moment, then back to Shane, "Have you ever driven an actual car before, though?"
Shane shrugged his shoulders a little at that question. Would he love to? Yep. But at fifteen he needed a learners permit, and... Oh who was he kidding. "I mean, legally I'm not supposed to. But I have a few friends who have let me behind the wheel of a car," he probably shouldn't have put emphasis on "friends", since they were admittedly a bad crowd. "I think that kind of ended back in the last town I was in though. I sorta... Maybe almost crashed a Mustang."
Override didn't know what a mustang was. It was probably a car. If she was human, she would have considered the offer she was about to give as 'strange' to say the least. But she wasn't, so she didn't. "You seem like a good kid, Shane. Tell you what; seeing as I'm not in a street race at the moment, plus I don't think you should be walking home at this hour... would you like to give the GT40 a test drive back to your house?" Lori patted the steering wheel eagerly. Her understanding of human societal norms was still growing, but for the most part she knew that most humans liked being in their homes at night.
OK. Now Shane's stomach was in knots. Had this woman just offered him a ride in this car? Frankly, it would be a dream come true in this car but... Could he even trust this woman? He thought about the cops again, and how he probably had very little time to find a way to get somewhere fast. But if he was going to do something this dangerous, well, what could be the worst that could happen? He'd need to find somewhere populated though, or this woman would obviously know what was up, he figured.
So he put on his best smile and pretended he knew what he was doing, naturally. "Wow! You'd let me drive it? That would be awesome," he paused a moment, thinking of how to put it as he approached the car. "I mean, my house is uh... Quite a drive, it may take us a while."
He really hoped it wasn't clear that he was trying to lie through his teeth.
Lori 'kicked' the door open for Shane, shifting over to the passenger seat. She had already set herself to manual control by the time her new friend reached the door; no need to scare him with a self-driving car, just yet at least. "No worries, I'm all gassed up already. Besides, this baby can get you anywhere you need to go nice 'n quick."
It felt just a little weird talking about herself in third person like that, but Override was rolling with it. Things started to add up in her head as she thought about them. Shane being out so late, alone, with his house allegedly a long drive away; he was being awfully evasive about something.
